Show THE BLAME BOOM Reasons for Delaying a Long Promised Letter HIS DISLIKE FOR TOM REED An Alliance Between Senators Gorman and Hill Iho Maryland Man Has a Presidential Presiden-tial Bee In His Bonnet HERALD BUREAU t 1 Cor of Fifteenth and G Streets N W f J WASHINGTON Jan 131 heard a new explanation today wby Secretary Blaine has not written his long promised letter declining to accept the presidential nomination nomi-nation Secretary Blaine feels that said action on his part would result in thodis bandonment of all the Blaine Republican organizations throughout the country At the present time it would seem that the BLAINE MEN ARE GENERALLY ON TOP so to speak But the secretary feels that his unqualified withdrawal from the list of presidential possibilities would have a disheartening dis-heartening effect upon his followers that it auld be regarded as a substantial victory victo-ry for President Harrison and that it would result in bringing tho partisans of that gentleman to the front He feels therefore that in justice to his friends he must continue to preserve his silence until a time shall arrive when he can no longer refrain from speaking But there is also another consideration involved about which Mr Blaines friends do not speak so glibly It is well known that the most bitter antagonism has existed exist-ed for years between Blaine and ex I Speaker Tom Reed of Maine I there is any one man on earth of whom Blaine is thoroughly jealous and whom he both fears and dislikes it is THE LATE REPUBLICAN SPEAKER of the Republican House of Representa lives And well he may for Reed is one of the brightest and brainiest and cleverest clever-est men in public life I Blaine were to announce his unwillingness to accept the nomtnuti n because of his shattered health Tom Reed would within fortyeight hours erect his own presidential lightning rod And Blaine could not prevent him from securing the united support of the Maine delegation I i well known here and in New Eng land also that Blaine is less popular in Maine than in any other Republican state Senator Frye ho to whom Blaine wrote his celebrated strictures apaingt the Mc Qnloy tariff billIs no fiend of Blames and would lake a ALICIOUS DELIGHT IN PROMOTING REEDS CANDIDACY knowing how irritating such a course would be to the premier Representative outelle of Bangor who in the past was one of Blames most loyal adherents has also gone over to tie opposition with many others of the state party leaders Throngh the efforts of these gentlemen aided by the great popularity of Mr Reed the later would find no difficulty in control ing the delegation How successful his presidential aspirations might prove it is impussible as yet to say but it is an open ecrtt here that Blaine would rather seethe see-the devil himself in the White House than the brilliant Republican leader of the Portland district The Cleveland men in Congress are very much disturbed over the Damon and ythias friendship that exists between ENATOR ARTHUR P GORMAN AND SENATOR DAVID BENNETT HILL In a general way the Cleveland men have known for some time past that Gorman and Hill were on intimate terms but until the two men made known their attachment right before the eyes of the nation no one seemed to recognize the importance of the I alliance Mr Hill has only been in the city a few days and yet he and Mr Gorman have already had a number of secret con ferences It is quite apparent that there is I I something in the wind The Cleveland men L are naturally suspicious of Hill and they draw tbe conclusion from his association I with Gorman that the two have put their heads together and set out to defeat Clove land for the nomination A number of Democratic Senators with whom I talked today but who for obvious reasons did not care to be quoted were quite sure that the Senator from Maryland I had THE PRESIDENTIAL BEE IN HIS BONNET and that Mr Hill intended to do all ho could to aid him Of course Mr Hill will not come out wilt his indorsement of Gorman Gor-man now It would be premature and lose force between now and the meeting of the national Democratic convention The indorsement the Cleveland men say will come la good time Mr Hill they contend con-tend fully realizes that with levelands opposition it will be impossible for him to secure the nomination Aware of this the natural thing for so clever a politician as Mr Hill is admitted to be is to name the nominee And the nominee is to be Arthur Fuo Gorman The Gorman menand there are not a few of them heresay that while Cleve i land is the Democratic favorite in New England aoubt and the west Gorman is beyond THE CHOICE OF THE SOUTH and can divide honors evenly with Clove I land on the Pacific slope As for New York the Gorman men say that their favor ito will prove a much stronger candidate than either Cleveland or HilL The former has taken no part as yet nor does he intend to in itic fight of the Cleveland and Hill factions m the Empire state President Harrison is devoting all his energies to securing a renominotion With Blaine out of the way as he undoubtedly undoubt-edly will be the President believes that he has plain sailing Re fired his first gun yesterday by DISCHARGING A LOT OF ANTIHARRISON OFFICIALS in the Philadelphia internal revenue office These will be followed by others in various parts of the country and ibo official axe will be kept busy from now on Ho sent for Chairman Clarkson several days ago and the two were closeted for an hour in the Presidents prIvate office at the While I House There is no longer any doubt that the President has control of the Republican can national committee through Mr Clark son With this at his back and the immense im-mense federal patronage excited in his favor President Harrison has certainly a long lead over all competitors in the presidential race |
