president of the Rio Grande Western a most pleasant gentleman gentle-man First VicePi esident Peabody and Second VicePresident DodgE entertained a number of friends in the presidents handsomely equipped car the Nomad last night and discussed matters of state regarding the good of the road the territory ter-ritory and also the good things of life The hosts have just returned from the golden shores of California where they left the flowers abloom and housed themselves very closely in the presence of the weather that South Dakota has loaned to Utah No action has been taken as yet in regard to the Deep Creek road nor has any conference con-ference been held so far Assistant Smith By circular No 2 under date of January 1 1 for the home office Mr Cassius C Smith has been appointed assistant to General Manager D C Dodge of the Rio Grande Western Mr Smith who is a pleasant gentleman accompanied the Press club excursionists from Denver and is in the city at present Colonel Dodge went to Ogden yesterday to meet President Palmer and FirstVIce President George Foster Peabody who came up from San Francisco and are here at present The Saltair Project Unless Councilmen Pickard Anderson and Lynn of the city council change their minds or go back on their promises the next session of the city solons will see the Saltair railway franchise passed AU the members save the three mentioned above were heartily in favor of the passage of the ordinance on Tuesday evening last but Lynn Pickard and Anderson objected to the bH being railroaded through at one session and further consideration was therefore postponed for one week There are those who have all along looked upon the scheme as a purely visionary or speculative one and on this account alone the petition has aone petton not received the attention it otherwise would have However there it no longer any reason to doubt but that the company means business or that there will be another an-other standard guage road to the Great Salt Lake before tho next bathing season opens When asked if ho were satisfied with the conditions Imposedthat work must be commenced on the road within ninety day and the line completed to the lake within a yearMr N W Clayton who is the prime mover in the enterprise enter-prise said The conditions are very satisfactory indeed we expect ex-pect to have the road in operation by the 1st of June at the latest We would much parferred to have entered the city on South Temple First South or Second South streets but street as these thoroughiares aro already badly encumbered with railroad road tracks we are satisfied with Third South It will cost us more by that street than any other but we would rather go to whatever expense is necessary than incur the ill will of those whom we expect to patronize ustba general public The completion of road your means competition for the Union Pacific of course Will this have the effect of cutting cut-ting the rates between here and tie lake I Well it looks that way now said Mr Clayton with a smile The company owns a strip of beach that ia fully equal If not superior to that at Garfield and wo have eniereo into thn scneme in vn hnHhnnM + m3 no nalnearte way Our pirns will be disclosed further as we proceed with the work which will soon be undertaken Salt Lake will have two good bathing resorts re-sorts next summer and thus get whatever benefit may result from competition competi-tion It was a mistake to build tho resort at Lake Park viewed from a financial point at least that is the way it looks to me but competition forced upon the Union acilic by that resort forced the big road to erect the present very handsome structures struc-tures at Garfield Beach which commodious aa they aro cannot even now meet the demands de-mands made by the citizens of Salt Lake I and the thousands of tourists who visit thia city yearly and whose numbers are bound to increase as time progresses I do not say such will be the fact but there is every reason to believe that a 25cent round trip rate will be in effect between this city and the lake next summer That the road will be built thero can be not terprise the slightest doubt Success to the en The Salt Lke Ogden The Salt Lake Ogden railway company com-pany said Mr A Hanauer jr who is prominently connected with the scheme is a freo lance It has no connection with the Union Pacific tho Rio Grande Western West-ern the Central Pacific Lao Saltair or any other road It will be as independent as the weather or the sun and will contribute its mite towards tho prosperity of this city in more ways than one 1 That is all you care to say at present I That is all I can say now and fie settled set-tled back in his chair and softly rubbed the bald spot that is slowly but surely spread Ing over his dome of thought n u nO Denver and Utah Common Points The Colorado and Utah Traffic association associa-tion met at the union depot yesterday for the purpose of taking action over certain traffic pounds from Denver Den-ver to Utah common points the present rate being 5205 per 16 pounds This reduction re-duction of 49 cents will prove a boon to the Denver Cotton Mills company as the new rate is lower than that charged tbe eastern factories to Utah and it will consequently enable that company to do business with the adjoining state on a paying basis The reduced rate will be in forco January
