I CANADIAN POLITICS Canadian politics is chiefly comprised within the limits of the two parties Tory and Liberal The former corresponds to tho Republican the latter to the Democratic Demo-cratic party in this country Naturally enough since the Tories are in favor of a high tariff and the Liberals in favor of a tariff for revenue only the latter were making so much headway that the Tones were threatened with sudden and complete expulsion from power Thereupon Sir JOHN MCDONALD declared de-clared the reciprocity ideas of tho Liberals were simply a masked scheme for annexing annex-ing the Dominion to the American Union and also frightened the FrenchrCatholics by declaring they would lose certain religious relig-ious and civil privileges if the annexation scheme were successfuL If Sir JOHN had had a copy of tho latest Idaho testoath disfranchising persons for the socalled crime of having once belonged to the Mormon Mor-mon church ho could have made the last argument somewhat impressive but as it i was the argument served to alarm the Catholics It is amusing to notice the device of the Tory leaders to divert the issue from low t or high taxation into one of loyalty versus ss annexation and religious liberty It was the Republican cry of British gold repeated re-peated under another form It is not to be wondered at that the Tories Tor-ies carried the election though the reduced majority is a sign of progress
