Show AMUsEM1r 1 INDIGO Indigo was tha first opera ever written by the tuneful Strauss and it first introduced to the world the since world famoas Blue Danube Da-nube and Thousand and One Nights waltzes It was the sensation in Vienna thirty years a o but was not brought to America for some reason rea-son till recent years when the Casino in Now York gave it an elaborate production From there Carleton secured it a he secured Nanon and Erminle and a very good bargain bar-gain it seeiiis to have been or him The blr and brilliant audience which greeted him and his company at the theatre last evening thoroughly thor-oughly enjoyed tae breezy delightful swing of the music the exce lent chorus the beautiful costumes and scenery and the several capable principals and there were almost al-most as many encores us there were numbers The libretto is very light walsted cad ut times the wit Is cheap but the funnyisms and specialties spec-ialties of Uigelow the comedian atone for a great deal and his principal act of conuuctinir the opera from the stage was n very new and very telling act and was very uproariously received re-ceived His first entrance is stolen from Francs Fran-cs Wilsons Merry Monarch but is well arranged and he would do better to come in as he does later on a bicycle au innovation for H monarch which was vastly funny Carleton himself was warmly greeted and though his part is not a great one indeed it is almost lost sight of in the last act his songs were encored and he handled his voice though one cannot say it is qvlto the folce of the Carleton of oldin a way that showed the excellent artist he ever was Miss Lane Is a graceful little body and her Fantasca was the best thing we have seen her do Mr Murrays fine voice was heard to advantage in H number of songs the boat of which was the Kings Champion and he acted quite well though he had no such opportunity as Iooh Bah gave him in The Mlkaao Mr Fitzgerald made a hit in his topical song Never in a Thousand Years and got seven straight encores Miss Vincent an old friend looked too sweet to be a shrew Miss Wisdom more missive than ever had her old task of leading the Amazon march which well os It was done last night we suggest to Mr Carleton Is becoming just a trifle trito from ace even as Miss Wisdom is becoming just a trllle ponderous lead It The chorus is the big feature of the show the Thousand and One Nights waltz made nn exquisite ex-quisite finale to not two and something very refreshing It was as a change from the usual finale The Blue Danube waltzes excellently rendered by the company were enthusiastically encored but why dont Mr Carleton finish them Indigo is the competest production and the best thing altogether in spite of Us woak libretto that Mr Carleton has given us since his first production of Nanon and The Mikado Compared with Indigo Dorothy isnot in it Tonight Gilbert Li Sullivans Gondoliers will receive its first production In Salt Lake with the following cast Giannettft Miss Clara Lane Tessa Miss Annie Vincent Duchess of Plaza ToreMiss Clara Wisdom Casilda her daughter Miss Marion Langdon Marco Palmlerl Mr J K Mu ray Guisseipe PsimioniMr W H Fitzgerald Grand Inqulator Mr Charles Blgelow Luis M Fred Huntley Franco Mr Miles Parker Innez Miss Lou Winslow Fiammetta Miss Maria Bach Angelica Miss Boasle Howard AND i W T CarletonAs the Duke Plaza Toro Villagers Gondolier Pages CourtIers Etc Dorothy has been shelved for Saturday night nnd in its place Indigowill bo presented |
