Show A SILK VORY EXPERT A Retired Merchant Defrauded by a Handsome Woman She Induced Him to Buy 8 New Kind of SilkWorm Silk-Worm EgeHe Finds He is Bilked and Has Her Arrested SpecIal to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch TOPEKA Kan Nov 7MIss Alvysus Palmer who claims Chambersburg Pa as her home was arrested in this city this afternoon on the complaint of F L Mc Leland a retired merchant who charged her with having obtained a large sum from him under false pretences Miss Palmer came to this city about six months ago and claimed to be a silk worm expert She was handsome about thiry years of age and knew how a fortune could be made in a year by handling a species of silk worm known as tho sacred silk worm of India which would thrive in any climate and make eight times as much silk as the Chinese silk worm She Informed the public that she would establish a large industry in-dustry here and that the eggs would bo supplied by J F Gore of Portland Me for whom she was agent Mr McLelland became deeply interested in the scheme and agreed to become a partner Miss Palmer said she had 3000 to invest and displayed a note signed by three parties in Chambersburg Mr 110 Leland asked her to prove the noto was good and was shown the next day a dispatch from the First National bank of Chamsbersburg stating that the parties par-ties were good for 50000 Miss Moran a cool calculating and uncommunicative un-communicative woman who also claimed to bo a silk work export was introduced by Miss Palmer and business was commenced under the firm name of Palmer Moran Oo Mr McLelland being be-ing tho silent partner Eggs were purchased pur-chased and McLiQlland furnished the money The two women dressed elegantly occupied boxes at the theatre and became the talk of the town Their business grew for every mail brought orders for eggs one contract being for 150000 eggs for 2S500 Other orders for 50000 and 100000 eggs were received weekly Mr McLelland furnished the money to buy from Gore About week the one ago merchant mer-chant became suspicious He investigated and claims to have found that there was no First National bank in Chambersburg and that the dispatch showed him was a forgery forg-ery He had Miss Palmer arrested this afternoon and is now footing up his losses |
