Show MORMON AND MASON A T Heist Draws a Comparison Between the Two A Bigot Might Raise the Same Objections to the Order as to the Church Once let the finger of suspicion be pointed at a person or class of persons and thousands will lend their aid in finding facts that will seem corroborative of the charge Once let a popular proujdice be started and everything will be accepted as corrobrating evidence When Mormons nominated prominent church officials for civil office this was conclusive evidence of political dictation by the church The charitable way of interpreting in-terpreting this fact would be to say that the same qualities which make the individual individ-ual a loader in the church would also make him a leader out of the church When the Mormons nominated lay churchmen or gentiles for office it was conclusively presumed pre-sumed that this was a trick for private church ends then the very fact that such a person was nominated to office was again accepted ac-cepted by the credulous and bigoted public as conclusive evidence of church dictation If In the last election the Mormon vote had been divided nearly equal as between Democrats and Republicans as was predicted pre-dicted this would have been most convincing con-vincing to the average narrowminded Liberal Lib-eral that the division movement was for statehood and a Mormon trick Had the majority of votes been given to the Republicans that would have been just as conclusive evidence of insincerity upon the unfounded assumption that it was a bid to coax the Republicans out of the Liberal party Tho MormonRepublican voter however being profoundly in earnest in his desire for good government and knowing that his own party was hopelessly in the minority minor-ity he chose between what to him seemed two evils Democrats and Liberals and of these he choso tho lessor This to any impartial im-partial mind would have been an evidence that the Mormons are good citizens though perhaps not blind Rupublican partisans Lo and behold I even this is offered by designing de-signing politicians as a conclusive evidence of Mormon trickery and their willing dupes after fastening tighter about thoir eyes the bandage of hate take this morsel of wholesome truth givo it a coating of their own bitter bigotry then blindly swallow swal-low it whole and endeavor to make the outside out-side world believe that their cries of pain are further evidences of Mormon trickery With the average bigoted Utah Liberal as a juror you can always get a verdict of Youll be damned if you do and damned if you dont against any Mormon Let me assume that we were now enjoy ing a periodic antiMasonic craze instead of an antiMormon idiocy Then suppose some one should call the attention at-tention of the fevered community to the official offi-cial letter of the grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of free and accepted Masons as published on page 15 of the printed proceedings pro-ceedings of the Grand Lodge of January 1890 It reads as follows On the 10th of February next the body politic that has for forty years misruled our rich and fair territory and stood In the way of progress will crumble down On Its ruins the body Masonic Ma-sonic ought to erect a temple that will stand till time shall be no more Brothers our time has come Let us be up and doing Permit mo now to give you a list of per sons who commissioner It is also said that the strange political affection af-fection which those two eminent Liberal leaders O W Powers and the Rev T C Iliff have for each other may be accounted for by the fact that they are both Masons In addition to the names above given numerous Masonic beneficiaries of the Liberal Lib-eral administration might be mentioned among the recipients of franchises and lessees of Warm Springs property etc I might also add tho name of Harry Haynos who is member of the a legislature and a member of the Mt Moriah lodge of this city The list of Masons who hold official positions as given above is necessarily incomplete in-complete because I have no means of knowing all the Masons of this city and because be-cause there are butafew of the subordinate officials of the city administration whoso names I know The list I give is only from personal acquaintance To tho reader who is not a Mason I leave these facts for his own interpretation and should he como to tho conclusion that the Masonic fraternity is a secret organization controlling tho Liberal Lib-eral party then it is for him to decide whether or not ho has a choice between Masonic or Mormon control of public af fairs provided he has no word in either As for myself I am free to say that I prefer pre-fer to give the same charitable interpretation interpreta-tion of tho evidences herein set forth which I ask Masons to give others and this leads me to the conclusion that Mr Diehl went outside of his official duty in writing as he did and the remarkable facts above sot forth are purely accidental It is certain that such men as Williams Dick son Varian and others are entitled to their position by their merits and do not need the aid of the Masonio fraternity to help them to position Now lot me ask of you Masons this that you give the same evidence upon which you convict the Mormons the same charitable interpretation which you need for yourselves in order to clear your own skirts of political intrigue You must know that if the merits of your order were tried by the evidence of persons who had committed moral perjury by revealing your secrets and it is almost wholly by the evidence of apostates that you convict the Mormon that then you must faro nearly near-ly as badly as do the Mormons as the numerous nu-merous exposes of Masonry will show Yours for justice and charity
