Show City Fathers I Yesterday afternoon the usual ordinary or-dinary fortnightly meoing of the City Council took place at the Council Chamber commencing at 4 oclock Mayor David Eccles presiding There were oresent Aldermen Dee Watson and Keevs and Councillors Boyle Smnin Brown and Clark < Councillor Smuin offered divine prayer The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved PETITIONS Adam Patterson asked permission to purchase lot 6 block 8 plat C Ogden City survey Reterred to committee on public lands Joseph N Ireland wanted the city to sell him lot 5 block 8 plat 0 Ogden City survey Committee on public lands Bernard Ternes asked for lots 1 and 2 in block 14 plat C Committee on public lands C L Peebbs S M Carhart C A I Henry D H Peery Jr and F C Scuramm petitioned the Council as follows fol-lows The undersigned residents of Ogden City respectfully ask you to sell in block 17 plot C Ogden City survey at the price you sold for last year viz 1 200 for thefolio wine reason The entire en-tire face of the block on Seventh street is cut by a deep ravine The entire face of the block on Eighth Street is cut I in the same manner Fir East Street on the west and Second East Street on the east are both in an impassable condition con-dition Referred to committee on pub lic lnnds John Cardon and fortynine other residents of the Lynne Precinct ask the City Fathers to cause a hill to be graded situated on North Main Street opposite the residence ofF of-F A Miller and to put in a brick or other culvert to convey the water across the street at that point Referred to the committee on streets Mr J H Krauss secretary of the Chamber of Commerce sent the following follow-ing communication I am intructed to advice you that at the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Chamberheld on Thursday evening the following resolution was adopted Whereas It is currently reported that the order of the quarantine physician of the city is persistently and shamefully disregarded dis-regarded by persons whose premises have been pin > under therefore Resolved That the Mayor and C ty Council b requested to enforce the ordinances and maintain a strict quarantine when ordered Laid on the table McLaren Boyle and twelve other residents of Eight Street asked the City Council to cause the water mains to be extended in order that they could have In the near future the advautae of city water Referred to committee on water supply with power to act Robert Robinson petitioned the Ciy Council to open up a street 100 feet wide from Second Street on the north to Sixth Street on the South Referred to committee on streets A communication was read from L B Adams cashier of the Utah National Bank on the matter of assessment on the surplus money held by his ban he being of the opinion that he was entitled to an overcharge which he alleged has been made in the assessment and again requested the amount of overpaid taxes refunded The Mayor explained that reliable legal advice had been taken and it was the opinion of the city attorney as well as other lawyers that the original assessment was correct and in the event of it not Having been paid the city could have enforced payment in full of the amount assessed Councilor Boyle made an explanation of the view held by Mr Adams who certainly considered himself entitled to the abatement in question Alderman Dee thought the assessment assess-ment made was perfectly equitable and they should pay taxes on the money on hand like any individual would have to do Alderman Reeve thought that as all other banks had been assessed on the capital stock the claim should be allowed and he embodied his idea in a motion which was carried REPORTS Aldermen Dee for the committee on laws through City Attorney Tanner presented an ordinance establishing a board of health and health regulations U This ordinance is elaborate elabo-rate in its detail and provides among other matters for quarantine limits and has for its object the prevention of the spread of pestilence infection or contagious diseases within the quarantine quaran-tine limits stipulated It passed the first reading Alderman John Watson reported for the claims committee on the electric light bill and recommended that it be paid Recommendation adopted |
