Show The Tariff Bill WASHINGTON March Chairman Mills is much pleased with the result of the work of Democratic members of his committee He says the bill is so conservative and fair that it will command com-mand a majority in the House He admits ad-mits that fourteen Democrats of the Randall school will probably vote against the measure two from Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania two from New Jersey four from Ohio four from Louisiana and two from California He expects however how-ever that their votes will be offset by these of at least eight or ten Republicans Re-publicans mostly from the northwest The aggregate reductions proposed by the bill are about 50000000 It is intended however to reenact the old packing clause providing for a duty on packages which does not lay a special tax on packages of different kinds but merely provides that the value of the nnHq be estimated and the duty be I as goods assessed sessed on them accordingly This will add from 5000000 to 1UOCO000 to the revenue so that th net reduction of revenue proposed by the bill will not exceed 45000000 It is the opinion of the majority of the committee he says that the revenue of the government should be reduced at least 70000000 25000000 therefore are left to be disposed of by changes in internal revenue rev-enue taxation |
