Show WHO The sensational story telegraphed from Indianapolis the other day to the effect that a conspiracy had been entered into to kill General Harrison has brought out the question of who would be President in the event of Harrisons death Every four years a similar query is propounded and it is always variously answered showing widespread wide-spread ignorance of the details of our electoral system among men who should be familiar with it If General Gen-eral Harrison were to die today no one could tell who would be President Presi-dent It might be Morton or Blaine or Sherman or Gresham or AIRer or anybody else It Is true the Presidential Presiden-tial election has been held and the assumption is that Harrison was elected President but as a matter of fact no President has been chosen and none will be until the meeting of the Electoral College next month Even then the electors will be bound by no i written law to cast their votes for Harrison Har-rison Honor binds the Republican electors to vote for him but if they were to cast their ballots for another man they could not be lawfully prevented or punished If the electors of New York and Indiana were to conspire to elect Cleveland and were to give him their votes Cleveland would be the legal President in spite of the votes of the people last November General Harrison being out of the way when the College meets in J anaary the electors would be free to vote for any other man The probabilities are that they would elect Morton President i as he would be entitled to the place in I the event of Harrisons death after election and would probably be the only person on whom all could agree Failing in this almost chaos would be apt to prevail and the election be thrown into the House of Representatives as it is not likely that in the short time for consultation con-sultation an agreement could be had on any man or that any man would receive re-ceive a majority of the 401 electoral votes which would be necessary to elect The suggestion of Harrisons death before the meeting of the Electoral College Col-lege exposes another flaw Incur method of selecting a President |
