Show The Historical ABsiclatloa WASHINGTON December 27At the morning session of the American Historical His-torical Association A C McLaughlin assistant professor of history in the University of Michigan read a paper upon the influence of Governor Cass upon the development of the Northwest North-west Frederick 8 Turner of the JohnS John-S Hopkins University read a paper by Professor W F Allen cf the University Uni-versity of Wisconsin of the position of the Northwest in H general History of our territorial system our policy of creating new States our guarantee of personal freedom Universal educational educa-tional and religious liberty he said found their first expression expres-sion in the great act which provided for a government of the northwest Professor George W Knigut of theObio State University read a paper upon the history and education of the northwest Major J W Powell director the United States geological survey exhibited a large map of North America and explained its compilation He said there were about seventythree distinct stock languages in North America each one having one or more dialects The work of investigating the subject he said had occupied seventeen years The tracing of the map showed the bounding of the greatest language divisions EVENING SESSION At the evening session Dr James C Welling of Columbia University read a paper on The States Eights Conflict Over the Public Lands He said the conflict had come down from the colonial col-onial days and that it had perpetually I reemerged in the history of the United i States from 1790 to 1360 and the speakers opinion was that slavery was Jot the cause in bringing about the conflict between the Northern and Southern States |
