Show PLBUROPNEUMONIA A How the Government Has Been Swindled CONSTRUCTION OF RAILWAYS Building of Competitive Xines Practically Prac-tically Coased thlo YearGeneral Hariiton Tho Sherman Bank A Kent Swindle t LONG ISLAND CITY N J December 27 Inspectors of the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States have unearthed un-earthed a novel swindling scheme It has been the custom since the bureau extended its operations to Queens County for all cattle killed because of being affected with pleuropnenmonia to be appraised and paid for out of the United StatesTreasury The appraised value has averaged 35 Ihe swindle just discovered enabled the perpetrators to pocket from 10 to 15 each for a large number of cattle condemned con-demned and slaughtered The swindlers would procure a small farm in the towns of Newton or Jamaica and send from New York or other places droves of cattle purchased at 25 per head Cows which had died of pleuro pnenmonia would then be obtained and exposed near the cattle a sufficient length of time to insure inoculation with the disease Inspectors visiting the farm would find the herd infected W and an appraisement and slaughter T would follow Although the inspectors have no doubt whatever that the owners of cattle have deliberately perpetrated the swindle they have been unable to obtain conclusive evidence to warrant arrests In order to prevent any more such swindling the chief inspector has decided to pay for no more infected cattle It is believed that the Treasury has been defrauded of between 10000 and 20000 during the past year One man had three herds condemned |
