Show WHAT MUST THEY THINK OF THEMSELVES THEM-SELVES I In conversation some weeks ago with a 1 gentleman from New York the writer learned that the others experience was that any kind of story on earth about the Mormons was legal tender in his state and that when the truth was told about them it was with difficulty that people could be lu to accept it He gave some of his own personal experience in the matter The first time ho visited this city upon his return homo he informed in-formed a company of his friends that he had found Salt Lake one of the I pleasantest places that ho had ever visited that it was well governed and was a very quiet and peaceful place His friends one and all felt assured that he must have been mistaken After te bad had occasion to visit us a number of times he testified to the honesty and business integrity of the people to be found here and that they were also sincere and honest in their religion as well as in their financial affairs Finding that his friends continued to look wise and seeing that they would not accept of his state visit ment he concluded upon his next that he would tell a few soulharrowing t > < > 4 stories of the Mormons when he returned home again He acted upon this idea when lo and behold what he said was swallowed holusbolus with eyes mouth and ears wide open and the general exclamation I ex-clamation was we thought so and we I knew you were mistaken about those Mormon Mor-mon He said that nothing was too preposterous pre-posterous for people to swallow with avidity avid-ity regarding the Mormons He then solemnly assured his friends thatr he had on former occasions truthfully represented tho people of Utah and that he had now been stuffing them to see what absurd stories they were toilhn tto accept against the Mormons There are perhaps no people on the face of the earth who have been more persistently persist-ently misrepresented than those forming the great majority of the people of Utah and when person reads the decision of Judge DERsoN and the annual report of Governor THOMAS heis reminded that these gentlemen are good judges of human nature and that they are Well posted on the kind of document to prepare for exportation expor-tation from our city THE HERALD ventures the assertion that if the governor of any other territory in the union were to make such an outrageous and unAmerican recommendation as that contained con-tained in the annual report of ARTHUR L THOMAS our supposed governor wherein he suggests that some federal agency should be authorized to appoint the county officers he would be burned in effigy before a day had passed and that no matter what political party he might belong to both Republicans and Democrats would join with one accord in the burning Amore A-more outrageous proposition in a free country was never penned than that some federal agency should be authorized to appoint the following county officers Selectmen clerks recorders superintendents superintend-ents of district schools and assessors and a man professing to be a lover of his country and of the free institutions thereof I might well blush with shame to see his name affixed to such an infamous proposition proposi-tion Blushing however is not one of the characteristics of the average Republican officeholder Men who possess ability and some native modesty can generally find something better to do than to accept government offices with little or no pay in them and absolutely no honor when conducted con-ducted as the average appointee in Utah has conducted his office THE HERALD fully appreciates the fact that a recommendation regarding the people of Utah to rob them of all their political and civil rights is hailed with delight by the people of the eastern states notwithstanding the fact that the same recommendation In another an-other place in America would not only be treated with derision but its author would be held Jn deserved scorn and contempt It goes without saying that Governor THOMAS and Judge ANDERSON are aware of the sentiments prevailing outside of this territory regarding the people here or the said officials bright if not shining contributions contri-butions to the antiMormon stock of literature litera-ture would never have been made While these gentlemen may gain praise today for their unAmerican and partisan par-tisan recommendations the dais da-is sure to come when the outrageous character of their recommendations will be fully and generally understood throughout republic The people of Utah have for years suffered suf-fered from misrepresentation but there is sure to come a time when all of their wrongs will be righted and we can well afford to wait for that happy event and when it does come we wonder how much self respect will be felt in the breasts of those who have caused the suffering We feel safe in saying absolutely none I |
