Show Eves me aepon policemen vijfiunt as they are cannot see everything or spot every thief that hangs around the Union depot seeking an opportunity to ply his vocation vo-cation Tuesday evening George Kerr the depot master stepped from his office into the baggage room for a minute and while he was absent a sneak thief entered and got away with his overcoat Several weeks ago Mr Harvey owner of the Kay building on the corner of Washington Wash-ington avenue and Twentyfifth street applied ap-plied to the city council for permission which was granted to erect a retaining wall on the south side toof his building Nothing has been done toward putting in said wall and the condition of the corner is bad as it has ever been Either the as a wall should be built and the sidewalk putdown put-down or the street committee should fill in against the building up to the grade of the street It was bad policy to leave the platform west of the Union depot uncovered The waiting rooms inside the building are not half large enough to accommodate the patrons of the different roads and to standout stand-out on the platform during a snow or rainstorm rain-storm is anything but pleasant It will be expensive to keep the platform clear of very snow and ice Why should not the platform plat-form be covered over i at least between the trains and out from the building to the first tracks Ia there any good reason why this inexpensive improvement should not be made An engine of the Utah Central road got off the track near the old depot building of that road and had not been got on again when the 930 train from Salt Lake came in That train stopped the other side of tho Central Pacific track and the passengers passen-gers got out and walked up to the Union passenger station A gang of workmen spent a great deal of time in getting the engine back again Inconsequence of this accident the train that should have left for Salt Lake at 10 oclock was delayed three quarters of an hour and finally had to go 4 around and get out over the old track which was used before the present yard was laid cut In cutting down a Twentyfifth street hill tho property owners on either side were subjected to great expense and tho end is not yet Neither aro the sidewalks in fit condition for the use of pedestrians nor has there been any welldirected and intelligent intel-ligent effort put forth to placo them in good shape The city council in a burst of generosity I i gen-erosity paid half tho expense of building a retaining wall in front of tho unimproved property belonging to Henry Pecry and Walter Holbrook This was wrong in principle but it ostablIshed a precedent On the corner of Adams avenue and Twenty fifth street stands the elegant residence re-sidence of Fred J KieseL The cutting down of tho hill damaged him ten times as much as it did any other property owner I the street It really was a benefit to the inbe tb others a detriment YtoW him Now he is building an elegant wall to cost at least three thousand dollars and by the time he gets everything shape again he will be out several thousand dollars more Ho has been forced to this expense in order to protect pro-tect himself and favo his property from utter destruction In the case of tho others the city has generously stepped in and saved their unimproved yqt valuable property from injury It seems to this writer that if any property holder on Twentyfifth street is entitled tqasbistanco it is Mayor Kiesel who asks for no help Either one ol those who have received help I from tho cityis well ablo to stand the en I tiro expense Why not offer to help Mr Kiesel 1I 1 I |
