Show PROViDE E IILOrME TIt T-It must be apparent to all that there is a great influx of people to Salt Lake The streets arc full of strange faces A little while ago everybody knew everybody else Today old inhabitants when they go on the principal business streets and see the crowds feel almost like strangers so few are the faces they sec with which they are familiar The new comers arc not all tourists tour-ists Many of them have come here to stay having been attracted by the reports of the beauty the climate and tho prosperity of Salt Lake and the opportunities here presented pre-sented for the operations of all classes of people We also fear that some have come I with the idea that a boom is on and they want to be in the rush The inference is that what is now seen is only the advance guard of a mighty army marching in this direction Wise ones arc predicting that we are experiencing merely the sprinkling before the breaking of the storm that whereas people are coming in small squads on every train in a little while they will be pouring in by regiments regi-ments Of course this is merely guessing and there may be nothing in it The influx may cease as suddenly as it set in and there may be a return to the old and steady growth which has characterized the advance ad-vance of the city from the first But let us suppose that the guessing is I not wide of the mark let us admit that the predictions will be only partially verified and then let us ask what all these people are going to do for a living Some of them arc bringing money with them and by the judicious use of that and their wits they will get along But good many are arriving arriv-ing without capitalsave the wealth of bone and muscle They are coming here because they have been led to believe that work can be had and wages are fair So far they have not been disappointed as there has been employment for all who desired to work But it will not take much more to overdo the thing and bring a glut in the i labor market and then what is to become of the surplus Is provision being made for a great influx of the laboring classes Wo fear not The papers do not tell of the building of factories We hear nothing of the inauguration of industries i which promise employment to workingmen Nobody is erecting mills which will require laborers Nobody is i establishing industries which will distribute dis-tribute money in the form of day wages It is suggested that it would be quite as wise to arrange to keep people here as it is enterprising to induce them to come and the way to retain them is to give them something to do They cannot earn a living by walking the streets and very few of them can pain livelihood by speculating in real estate Tin HEUAIII is pleased to note the rapid growth of population and it heartily welcomes all honest industrious maid enterprising people who come to cast their lot with us but it would be more reassuring re-assuring if there were greater preparations for holding these good people in the only way they can be held namely by providing provid-ing profitable employment for them You rich men and propertyowners who are interested in the stability and welfare of Salt Lake city think this matter over and ask yourselves if there is not danger from an influx of strangers for whom there is no work |
