San Francisco to Washington stopping sometime some-time in Chicago He was accompanied by a man who it has since been ascertained was Heffernan The latter was introduced ader an assumed name as a ClannaGael ember in good standing and senior guard an of the camp in California in short a man t be trusted Desmond after getting Heffernan well acquainted with Chicagoans went on t Washington and left his Calif or jia friend in hicago There Heffefnau stayed until a few days after Dr Cronins murder when he quietly dropped out of sight Q When the Chicago police began inquire r uto Desmonds visit they learned that he vras accompanied by another Irishman who was mysteriously missing This man was lleffernan but the police did not know it b la their effort to find him detectives were sent to San Francisco where they arrested Morris Walsh a cook on the Panama steamer Acapulco but of course ho turned out to be thu wrong man and they released him About two weeks ago Chief Hubbard of the Chicago police secured a photograph it Hetfernan I was shown to Mrs Conk In the lady with whom Dr Cronin in larded She at ouce said Thats the the white horse own who came hero with nf ter the doctor This was pretty strong aut the police wanted to be dead sure so polce Aithout saying anything about Mrs Conk tins identification they handed the photo raph to Frank Scanlan another intimate rieud of Dr Cronin who came along just rend latter was stepping into the buggy o answer a supposed call from OSullivan lie ice man Seanlan stopped for amoment to speak with the doctorand thus got a bettor ook at the bright pink tint Ho wears a long flowing dark moustache and has a cleanshaven chin but is capable of growing a thick stubby beard very rapidly The man who drove Dr Cronin from his home on the night of May a answers the description of Heffernan perfectly except descripton that he was poorly dressed and had a shabby beard Both of these features would be easy for Heffernan to assume especially if ho wished to disguise himself as he uu Joubtedly did did There is another strong point against Heffernan and one which he cannot deny Tho officers who are after him say that while in Chicago Heffcrnan was almost constantly con-stantly in company with Dan Coughlin and on the night of l May 3 it was alleged was seen leaving the house of a leading suspect ia the case at a late hour The Oakland
