Show JUDGE CARLTON RETIRES I And so Judge CUUTOX in compliance with a demand has sent to the President his resignation as a member of the Utah commission This was to have been expected ex-pected and nobody will be surprised least of all the judge himself Judge CAKLTOX is an able active and prominent Democrat and hails from the Presidents own state He is not only opposed to HAI BISON in politics but like a true Hoosier Democrat worked for the success of his party in general gen-eral and the defeat of the late Republican candidate in particular The election of General HAKKISOK naturally and necessarily meant the retirement of CAKLTOX for it would be the basest of party ingratitude for the President to favor Indiana Democrats Vc have known for some time that the judge regarded re-garded it as extremely improbable that lie would remain He has been so certain of his early retirement that he has been arranging ar-ranging his affairs to take his farewell of Utah and return to his former Held of operations Nor do we believe the gentleman gentle-man goes out with any regrets He was III member of the original commission having been appointed by President Attracts in 14S2 For seven years he has been a leading spirit in the board most of the time its chairman and he goes out of office having a record of which any man might be proud It was a difficult position which he occupied occu-pied one requiring excellent judgment and a keen sense of right and justice but he managed so well that he retires now with the respect and confidence of all those in this territory who appreciate uprightness and independence in of liiials who believe in the impartial enforcement of law and love fairness The others have never admired Judge CAKLTOX and it is to his credit that they have not for their admiration would be a reflection on his character as an official and as an upright up-right man We believe that Judge Carlton came to Utah with the firm determination to perform the duties of his office as he understood un-derstood them honestly faithfully and without fear or favor We know that coarse and brutal assaults upon him have failed to swerve him from the course marked out or induce him to submit to the guidance and direction of prejudice Abuse inspired by greed for power and unreasoning unreason-ing hate has had no other effect than to cause him to stand more erect and be more independent While others have cringed and bowed to the lash which at one time was more feared in this territory than it is today CAKLTOX stood proudly and manfully forth performing perform-ing his duty and standing by his oath of I office It was because he showed the courage cour-age to be a man that he was so heartily disliked dis-liked by a presumptuous and unprincipled faction and respected by all good citizens THE HERALD can say in truth that it believes be-lieves that for the retention of many of their rights as citizens the people of Utah can thank Judge CAKLTOX for there were those associated with him and others urging them on who would have disfranchised the party of the great majority and turned the territory over to an unscrupulous unscrupu-lous few to be oppressed and plundered The public has known of these things as they have occurred and because the people have known of them Judge CAKLTOX will carry to his eastern home the respect and best wishes of thousands of good men and women of Utah This makes two vacancies in the commission com-mission Others may be expected to follow shortly Unless we are mistaken there will soon be a complete reorganization of the board Aside from the local citizens who arc ambitious to serve on the commission commis-sion none of whom in our opinion are likely to get the place the only persons who have been prominently mentioned for commissionerships area are-a Mr DELAXO of Pennsylvania a Mr ROBINSON of Indiana and exGovernor SAixaciiSof Nebraska All these are spoken of as good men Governor Srx DEUS is so well known in Utah where he has many personal friends that the hope is freely expressed that he will be selected As Judge CAKLTOXS resignation has reached Washington and THOMAS appointment appoint-ment to the governorship has been made and announced the places of these two gentlemen will probably be filled at once |
