Show CLIMBING THE CRAGS The Progress Made by the Salt Lake Eastern THE GOOD WORK BEING DONE The Road to He Completes to Park City Within a MonthThe Union Pacific Scared General and Personal For months past this Salt Lalco t Eastern railroad company has been steadily engaged In rushing to completion the extension of their line of road to Park city forming a connecting link between the great mineral camp with Its untold wealth and Salt Lake the natural oeatie of trade Obstacles which appeared til most insurmountable have been encountered but still the progress continues and mans Ingenuity In-genuity is > everywhere apparent Along the entire route the scenery Is most magnificent in grandeur and the autumnal hues of foliage lend a wonderful enchantment to the picture isquenuss of the craggy mountain peaks which tower to the clouds on either hand Climbing up TOWARD THE SUMMIT the rise is everywhere apparent until when near the top the foaming waters leaping oer the pebblebottomed stream arc left far below and the roadway continues to ascend the mountainside mountain-side Still upward extends the grade until the veryplnnacle the Wasatch range will hae been reached and the descent made on the other side Well might this be called the scenic route of the Wasatch Trains now run to Roachos half way house about sixteen miles from the city and workmen by hundreds line the uncompleted portions of the grade beyond Between the terminus and the summit 2oO moa and sixty teams arc employed em-ployed and the grade will probably be completed before the end of tho week AT LAMBS CANYON a yawning chasm Is encountered one hundred feet in depth by several hundred In width which it would cost J5OJO to till and at least 8000 to construct the cheapest kind of trestle over To avoid tho heavy expense for the present a track is being laid some distance up Lambs cation whore the road crosses the canon and comes down on the other side The canon Is too narrow to admit of a turn being made conso fluently the trains will back down The grade on this switchback will be completed today when a large force of men will begin tracklaylng Between the summit and Park city a distance nf about twelve miles the grade Is k NEUIIY HALF COMPLETED and 300 men and 275 teams are employed on the the different gangs and it is expected that the entire grade will be completed within two weeks when track laying will be pushed with all possible energy from both ends of the line and the managers feel confident that they will be able to run trains through to the Park by November 1 The completion of this road will open A NEW ERA In the commerce of Salt Lake and give Park city si direct communication with the metropolis which advantages to both cities can hardly be overestimated In addition to this the road runs through mountains of shale which can be transported trans-ported to the city In unlimited abundance and great rock quarries will be opened all tending to the Improvement of our city The shale Is being used all along the track and with the I fortypound steel rail being put down make it I Hi best narrow gauge roadway In the country I |
