Show IN A BLAZE OF SPLENDOR Th3 Opening Exercises of the Territorial Exposition of 1889 For the past several weeks THE HEIULD has kept its readers apprised of the work being done in and around the fair grounds and the labors of the directors have been closely followed Few there were however how-ever who were prepared for the scenes witnessed yesterday Ail had expected improvement of course but none were prepared we think to behold the progress made 1 Twelve oclock had been announced as the opening hour and even then the busy hum of preparation and the sound of the hammer had not ceased indeed save during dur-ing the brief time consumed in the opening exercises work went on all the afternoon and not until the vast building was flooded b y the plectric light was the work of arranging ago but some Of the exhibitors i 01 have been a little tardy that is all 1 VIEWED FRO THE GALLERY yesterday morning the lower floor presented pre-sented a most animated appearance and at the same time a most lovely view The national colors intertwined with green foliage liage presented a most pleasing sight and hey were everywhere Each of the counties coun-ties of the territory was represented by a shield bearing its name and these were arranged around the lower halL Varicolored Vari-colored banners pendant from the high ceiling made a very pleasing effect and indeed the whole arrangements were most decidedly artistic Several innovations in the arrangement of the lower floor and gallery were noticed and ra dn eai 0li oO ta 11 there was a general air of improvement all around The doors were opened at precisely pre-cisely 12 noon and soon thereafter the building was well filled At 1 pm President Presi-dent Winder and the board of directors took their seats upon the stand and the former introduced Bishop O F Whitney who delivered an eloquent and impressive prayer OOVEUVOK TIIOMIS1 ADDRESS Governor Thomas was next introduced by the president and as ho stepped to the front he was received with applause On behalf of the president and directors of the Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing society i 10 extended a cordial clcomo to those present He was glad to be able to say that the president I and directors had worked with all the zeal and I sgJki ftea h energy yrs possessed to make the fair a buc cess They did so because they felt a pride In their work and because they felt a stronger and deeper Interest in tho territory in which they lIed They glory In Its success They also felt that the fair If successful would be a tribute to the intelligence the energy and the Industry of the people He expressed the hope that the people would recognize the work of the directors and endorse and sustain them He congratulated congrat-ulated the citizens of the territory upon tho magnificent display they had made which was worthy of the territory Utah had long been famous for her soil climate and natural attractions attrac-tions There was no more highly favored portion por-tion in all the great west and the visitors to the fair would appreciate this more strongly than ever The cattle exllblt was a remarkably good one much more so than that made at any fair previously held Tne manufacturing exhibit was also a good one Tho mill fabrics made an excellent display dis-play The flannels llnseyj hose woolen yarns 1 Ja g ft tep and dress patterns were of superor quality 1 The splendid splay of fruits and vegetables rtt I attested the Inexhaustible fertility of the soil and In view of the long dry season was a remarkable re-markable one The display of dairy products butter and cheese of boots and shoes terra cotta ware aerated beverages sweetmeats crackers and agricultural Implements were referred re-ferred to He called attention to the exhibit made In the ladies and line arts departments and said the visitors would find In the ladles department many articles of domestic economy which could only be produced by the taste the skill and the genius which women alone possess pos-sess and in tho line arts department they would find works which were produced by the genius which gives Inspiration to the pencil of the artist I He hoped the peoplelof tho territory would o n tinue these fairs they brpught the people to I gather In a social way and served to stimulate Bompetltlon among the agricultural andmanufac1 tiring Interests Agriculture should be encouraged i I encour-aged Man first obtained his food by tilling tbs soil and today If every manufacturing establIshment estab-lIshment on the face of the earth wero swept away he could obtain living from the patient and everyielding soil Tho agricultural Industry In-dustry was the basis of all prosperity i E Civilization I with Its countless blessings had always followed in the w aco of agriculture and aJg g eicfu t H I commerce and education In turn had followed agriculture and commerce I I He hoped the people would grow In experience and their knowledge children until and Utah educate became h first ltCll and the I states and territories of the west In point of agriculture and the various Industural pursuits and that they would wisely strive to enjoy the priceless blessings bestowed by the government < c I under which they lived the best government which the sun had ever shone upon President Winder declared the Territorial Terri-torial Exposition for 1889 now open and I amidst applause the audience dispersed to view the many attractions afforded |
