Show HALT If the business men are wise they will exert their influence in the direction j of calling a halt in this reckless desperate des-perate onslaught upon the Mormons They will do this as a matter of protection pro-tection against the disaster that the raid is certain to bring upon the country Already a considerable number num-ber of persons have felt impelled to take passage by the underground route some going to the States others to I Europe and still others it is said to the islands of the sea As a rule these i i i 1 are the solid men of the country if t I they are not rich they are the men who make business who stimulate industries II r indus-tries and who lend solidity to the I trade and commerce of the Territory they are among the men who encourage en-courage and inspire the people to industrial J in-dustrial undertakings and who help I i to maintain activity in business Already Al-ready a feeling of uncertainty 1 i and doubt has taken hold of the I people there isan unsettled hesitating i I I sensation throughout the community II and it is growing more pronounced f j daily as the raid progresses and the j courts strike out after new victims One j doesnt have to be possessed of vast I commercial forcknowledgeto say where j this thing is going to lead as regards business It will simply result in trade paralysis and disaster with the necessarily neces-sarily attendant wrecks While the Mormon people largely make the business of the Territory I that is to say if it wernt for the Mormons I Mor-mons there would be comparatively little I business here Mormons are least af I i f icted by trade depressions and null j times In their stubborn contentment they will be healthy and happy however I violently the elements may rage but today they are worried less than those who are so much annoyed by their conduct It is the other classes who are suffering and will suffer from t this violent attack which is doing so much to unsettle things and destroy the confidence in the stability of the country which is so essential to prosperity pros-perity and good times The halt is not asked or expected except ex-cept as to methods It is safe to say that ally threefourths of the members of the local bar confidently believe that all this work that is being done by the District Court will be undone when legitimate proper methods will have to be pursued The District Attorney himself is in deep doubt as to the validity of his operations yet he forges ahead to make a little cheap reputation ij reputa-tion and to gather in the fees When proper methods are employed and unquestioned regularity of course pursued there will arise no protest Men will then accept the consequences of their acts and do so cheerfully They only now object to these liigh handed proceedings to this punishment guilty or innocent to ttiis emphatic denial of the commonest rights of the citizen accused ac-cused of crime It is this that is driving i men away who would face the music fairly played it = Is this that is breeding tae onht distrust and reeling of uncertainty that are encountered en-countered on ill sides Ills thatvhich u going to eet Utah back fully a year in the progressive march that she was Inakirig If the iMibineis men can afiordthis the peopjq generally will not complain f The latter are unaffected but the former for-mer are not They are the sufferers and they can if they desire and will exercise their influence to have the crusade checked until it is known that It is proceeding on the right track Within three months the prospects now are the United States Supreme I j Court will say whether or not I I I the Courts here can go on as they hare been going It doesnt seem long I a to wait but it ii long enough to give to jjj Utah such a setback that she will not 31 1 1 Of yj recover tins year |
