Show I The Senate WASHINGTON February 7rheChair laid before the Senate a new set of credentials of Wm M Evarts Senator elect from New York Read and filed Sherman from the committee on library reported a joint resolution which passed accepting the offer made tqgovernment by Wm H Vanderbilt and Mrs lrfft of the swords medals bronze and aiiitings and other articles of value presented to General U S Grant by various governments of the world as tokens of appreciation of his illustrious character as a soldier and statesman The resolution expressed the thanks of Congress to Mr Vander but and Mrs Grant and provides that the articles be placed in charge of the librarian of Congress The secretary was however to receive them for safe keeping until a proper repository may be provided for them in the Congres ional library Cameron of Pennsylvania called up the bill to authorize a retired list for privates and noncommissioned officers of the United States army who have served thirty years or upward After donate the bill passed yeas 37 lays 5 the nays being Coke Colquitt Harris Saulsbury and Vest Van Wyck moved an amendment tome to-me of the private pension bills provid ng that all the soldiers widows or nunor children who by the existing laws are or may become entitled to 5 a month shall in the future receive 12 Van Wyck explained that the provision provi-sion was the same as that which the Senate Had put in the Mexican pension bill There seemed to be no other chance Van Wyck Said to get justice done to a large number of deserving people who were now receiving a pittance pit-tance of 5 a month Blair thought the amendment might defeat the Mexican pension bill Van Wyck said it was already substantially sub-stantially defeated either the Mex lean soldiers nor any others would receive re-ceive anything frojn the House before the 4th of March Van Wycks amendment was agreed to yeas 37 nays 12 Those voting in the negative were Bayard Beck Chase Jockrell Coke Fair Harris Maxey Morgan Riddleberger Saulsbury and West Mitchell moved to add to the bill the further provisions of the Mexican pension pen-sion bill namely First That in considering cases of dependent de-pendent parents it shall be sufficient to show that such parents are without other means comfortable support than their own manuallabor or contributions from persons not legally bound for their support Second That proof that the applicant appli-cant was regularly mustered into service ser-vice shall be presumptive evidence of soundness at the time but subject to rebuttal and Third That no person shall be enti led to more than one pension at a time unless specially declared by Con gross These amendments were agreed to yeas 30 nays 17 Those voting in the negative were Bayard Beck Call Cock rell Coke Colquitt Fair Garland Hampton Harris Jackson Maxcy Morgan Riddleberger SaulsburySlater and Vest Executive session Adjourned The House WASHINGTON February 7Reagan asked unanimous consent to take from the Speakers table the interstate commerce com-merce bill with the Senate amendments amend-ments thereto for the purpose of non curring in those amendments but ONeill Penn objected WASHINGTON February 7At 5 oclock while the House was in committee com-mittee of the whole on the river and harbor bill Townsend moved that the committee rise He wished to move that the House adjourn having been advised that it was the intention of the friends of the river and harbor bill to continue this legislative day throughout Monday and thus crowd out the regular appropriation bills The motion was lost and the House took recess until Monday |
