Northwestern has been prominent lor its strength The market is now fairly active and strong at about the lowest prices of the day New York Stock Market NEW YORK May 0Wall StreetTIle stocks were steady to strong and in i early dealings developed considerable strength especially for Gould stocks Grangers were also strong while New York Central remained steady and then yielded a fraction but there was a slight reaction before 11 oclock in the whole list with only moderate fluctuations fluctua-tions Market has been quite active NEW YORK May 9Stock market less active and heavy until after 2 oclock when it became more livel again very strong Closed active an firm at about the best prices of the day NEW YORK May 9Governments quiet and strong showing an advance of y for the 4s and 3per cent for currency cur-rency 6s The stock imarket opened stron for almost everything except the New York Central which was heavy and during the forenoon devel oped no other feature than an active market with a steady buying by both bulls and bears the latter covering shorts while there was a fair amount of business done for long account After midday prices became more quiet and weak In some cases the lowest quotations quota-tions of the day were reached but this was followed by a rally during the his hour which continued until the close of the board The market finally closed d steady at the advances made and gener ally within a small fraction of the highest prices reached The interest of the street WAS centred in the news from Chicago regarding the meeting of the railroad officials in session there today and final a rally was made after it had been announced that the settlement of everything in the west and northwest was complete and that the rates would probably be restored on Monday the plan adopted being satisfactory to all the roads The continued repetition of the statement that Mr Vanderbilt was acting with some leading bears in depressing de-pressing prices and that he was a heavy seller of short stock led to his authorizing the publication of a statement state-ment in which lie says There is not word of truth in the stories that I am operating with Mr Cammack I am not interested in any way either with him or anybody else in bearing the stock market I have not sold a share 01 Central since I sold 250000 shares to the syndicate in November 1879 I have not sold a share of Lake Shore directly or indirectly for months Do you think I would sell Lake Shore at these prices 1 The result is a net advance ad-vance of 3f to 1J percent for the active stocks the greatest gains being mad by the Northwestern and Michigan Central but New York Central Cen-tral Lake Shore Pacific Ma and Lackawanna are each up Nothwithstanding the decided rally during the past two days almost every thing on the active list is lower tin evening than it wa5 a week ago the exceptions ex-ceptions being Northwestern which is unchanged and Union Pacific which shows an advance of J percent
