Show CHEAP TELEGRAPHY Great Britain is about to try another experlnientnpostal telegraphy that will be watched with interest in this country which will sooner or later adopt a postal telegraph system The present minimum rate in England is a shilling for twentyfive words or a cent a word The address and signature go free Partly to overcome the evil of extending the address and partly to reduce the cost to senders a new system sys-tem charges has been arranged and will go into effect on August 1 The new plan will reduce the minimum rate just onehalf but it contemplates cut ting down the addresses as much as possible to this t end the addresses ad-dresses will be charged for though the signature will go free It is said that frequently addresses contain con-tain twentyfive and the average is eleven word or one word more than the minimum message in the United States The minimum message in England will be reduced from twenty to twelve words and the charge brought down to sixpence The effect of course I will be to interfere with the wordiness of the people it is not thought that the government receipts will fall off any But what this country is most interested inter-ested in is why if in England the government gov-ernment can afford to send messages for onecent a word the American companies com-panies have to charge from three to twentyfive cents a word according to distance |
