Show The Pen I SALT LAKE CITY May 9 1885 To the Editor of TIrE HERALD Marshal Irelands reported instructions tions to put a stop to the U hazings receptions hangings hang-ings etc of new arrivals at the Penitentiary are good as far as theygo But why were such instructions neces sary Why were such proceedings permitted per-mitted at all What right has marshal or warden or guard to allow a prisoner to be abused by other prisoners l Is it not scandalous that such instructions should be needed If the first instance of any such abuse had been properly punished would repetitions have been likely And why was not the first and every offense of the kind properly punished pun-ished It all depends on the marshal and his aids Judging by the many reports re-ports Madame Rumor has been making of matters and things in that institution institu-tion which is conducted by Federal officials a Federal committee of investigation investi-gation would not be inappropriate The packed grand juries seem to have nothing to say on the subject That however is easily accounted for If Marshal Ireland can not or will not koep order in the Federal prison is not he a subject for Federal investigation If he is willing and able to keep reasonable reason-able order there why did he wait for such an outrage as the Aird case evidently evi-dently was before he showed his willingness willing-ness and ability There seem to be several screws loose in regard to more than one of the F 0 H fraternity hereabout A B C i I |
