Show How Lincoln CarriedPennsylvania At a social gathering in Philadelphia a few nights since composed of gentlemen gentle-men of Washington and of that city several interesting reminiscences and I statements were given which are now for the first time made public Colonel I A K McClure who instructed with much of we tneconuuentiai wore 01 me Republican campaign of 1SG4 recited the particulars of an interview which he had with President Lincoln in reference refer-ence to Republican prospects in Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania At this time as will be remembered re-membered there was much discontent in the North and grave apprehensions were felt bv the Administration of Mr Lincoln asto tile result in the two great States of New York and Pennsylvania where dissatisfaction was most rife It was felt to be absolutely necessary for I moral effect on the other States that the October election in Pennsylvania should be carried by the home vote Colonel McClure after a most careful survey of the political field reached the conclusion that there was the great danger as to this of failure He took the train for Washington and laid all his misgivings with his reasons there for before the President Mr Lincoln sighed and was silent for awhile He then Slid What can be done Colonel Col-onel McClure replied 1 see nothing except to furlough from five to ten thousand of the Pennsylvania troops and let them come home and vote Advise Ad-vise General Grant of your wisherthat five thousand be furloughed at once from his immediate command with permission per-mission I to return home To this Mr Lincoln replied that he dare not appeal to General Grant in such a case as he did not know whether General Grant was for or against him Colonel McClure Mc-Clure then inquired how about Sheridan Sheri-dan who was then in the valley of Virginia Vir-ginia Ob said Mr Lincoln Phils albrjgbV After some farther consultation consul-tation it wa decided thatiteadeand Sheridan should be communicatedwith by private messenger from the President Presi-dent with the request to furlough certain cer-tain regiments qf Pennsylvania troops under their command This was deae the soldiers went home and votedand Pennsylvania was carried for the Republican Re-publican ticket by a little more than 4000 on the home vote Had it not been for this such was the distrust and dissatisfaction at the time thaUtmight hare lost both New York aad Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania at the Presidential eleetien |
