Show Ilartlett Polonln Cass Loxnos April liThe Bartlett poisoning case was given to the jury today In closing the case for the Crown AttorneyGeneral Russell contended con-tended that from all the evidence it was clearly impossible for Bartlett to have committed suicide and that there could be no doubt that he was killed by the prisoner Mrs Adelaide Bartlett who has been maintaining relations with the Rev Mr Dyson and who was inspired to removeher husband because he was regaining his health The judges in summing up told the jury that Dyson had taken advantage of the husbands mnudlin nonsense to sup plant him in the affections of his wife and advised that no part of the clergy mans testimony although he had been a witness for the Crown be accepted as reliable The jury was out out a short time and rendered a verdict of acquittal LOSDOX liTbe verdict wus applauded ap-plauded by the spectators The ae tense presented two arguments which seem to have operated upon tbe jury with irresistible strength in favor of Mrs Bartlett The first was based on tbe undisputable fact that Sirs Bartleit retained the chloroform bottle for along a-long time after her husbands death It was argued that this could not have I been so if Mrs Bartlett had administered admin-istered the fatal drug and it was contended con-tended that the prisonerif she had killed her husband would have taken every pains to remove the eviuence of her crime Besides this it was shpwn that Mrs Bartlett was very anxious to have a postmortem made on the remains in order to ascertain exactly the cause of the death and that she authorized the expenditure of any amount of money O secure the best medical talent to make the autopsy for the purpose of putting the case beyond doubt From I f titgw rnfr l Ito I iiv this it was inferred that her motive was I to establish her innocence above all cavil When these facts were impressed upon the jury they cave the benefit of any doubt to the prisoner as instructed by the court to do |
