Show THE STRIKERS The strike In Eat St Louis and In the southwest must convince the Knights of Labor that it is much easier to apply the torch to combustible material ma-terial than it Is to control the flames when once they begin to rage The Knights may have a very laudable ob jet to accomplish but the elements they have to deal with are of a charac acter that are difficult to control When thousands of idle men are strolling through our large cities and capital is employing new men to fill the vacant places of the strikers it will be strange I indeed If some of the core lawless class among the striking workmen do not in their exasperation commit some overt act and bring about mischief that may end disastrously both to capital and labor Another evil to be reckoned in this connection Is that in all our large cities are desperate characters of revolutionists communists and socialists which the stringent laws in the European States and the vigilance of their police officers have driven from their own countries and they have taken refuge In the United i States They are more numerous numer-ous too than everybody knows These classta are only waiting an opportunity to rob and plunder indiscriminately and the labor riots afford them the opportunity op-portunity Never was the danger arising aris-ing from these elements more clearly brought to light than in the Cincin atj riots of ISSi Through the defects of the jury system and the corruptions of the courts it became almost impossible to convictthe murderers and thieves that infested the city and a number of miscreants mis-creants had been turned loose upon the community A mass meeting of citizens had been called to protest against the rooms pursued bv the courts Some of the best men in the city attended that mectingand spoke against the outrages perpetrated on society and demanded a change in court procedure pro-cedure As may be expected excitement excite-ment ran high and as the crowd came out of Music Hall some fellow rushed out of the crowd to the middle of the street and yelled Follow me and let us hang Burner a murderer then awaiting trial in the county jail In a moment a frantic crowd were rushing i upon the court house to carry out the j suggrstioa The disturbance was taken I advantage of by the blacklegs and scoundrels generally and riot held high carnival for several days the police orcebeioR altogether powerless to stay the ravages of the mob Many lives were lest the grand court house and other buildings private and public were left smouldering ruins and property prop-erty to the amount of hundreds of thousands of dollars was wantonly destroyed and It was only after a most vigorous display of military force and the use of cannon that order was restored res-tored This dangerous element is constantly increasing in our large citiea and at j very opportunity afforded will breakout break-out in just such acts of violence which I will teat to the utmost the strength ef lOur government I |
