| Show T1IE ELECTIONS < People sometimes lose a point by depending entirely on their own strength There is a moral whos point id decidedly applicable at thi time in the fable of the hare and the tortoise the former was the swifter I and knowing this to be the case took things easily and went to sleep on his assured vIctorybut during the sleep of confidence and satisfaction satisfac-tion the tortoise was continually plodding along and won The Peoples Peo-ples parry of Utah are the hare they can win every time but such apathy as that displayed by them monday will some day cause them to lose If will not do to forever depend upon actual strength the world is lull of incidents illustrative of the fact that the battle ia not always al-ways to the strong but that it is sometimes to the vigilant the active ac-tive and the brave no matter what the disparagement in forces and when the party of the right is in control and can to remain by exerting its full strength on each and every occasion when a display of its power is called for it is not true to itself if It fails to rally its forces and make is great an effort as though the out com were altogether uncertain While the result of yesterdays rating was as expected in favor of the Peoples candidatesthere is still something to bo read between the ines whit h announce the conclu iion a lesson to be gained by looking I ibave and beyond the naked acts The People have won simply because be-cause the other side happened to be as apathetic as they were nnd he Issue was of coarse proportionately pro-portionately about as usual but what if the opposition had turned oat in full force Would there not have been such a conclusion to the Balloting as would have awakened he community in the way that only in earthquake can Undoubtedly It is not going too far to say that if he entire Liberal strength had been polled yesterday Salt Lake County at least would now be heralded to the world as a community in which the majority were unable to maintain their natural and legal upiemacy Why should such things be r It is not so very hard work too to-o to the polls and there is but ittle effort required to cast a ballot rhen one gets there yet to judge by results one would be justified in including that it was one of the most severe and bitter tasks ever imposed upon the citizen The man who fails to vote for his party at any election negatively a sista the other side he at least gives the other side half a vote and is therefore acting partly on one aida and partly on the other But for the fact that such omissions are I known to be purely the result of neglinence and carelessness the II people who are entitled to but do not vote at elections might properly te considered a dangerous class in the community It Is a fair presumption that none of the voters of the Peoples ticket I who did not vote yesterday are at all anxious cr even willing for the control of our public affairs to pats into the hands of those who are not in sympathy with the masses Such a result would be disastrous from every point of view so far as the majority are concerned There are I but few offices worth fighting for I financially speaking but all are worth contending for and holding I on the broader and grander principle I prin-ciple of the greatest good to the largest number To be a candidae for and hold an official position under un-der such circumstances is a duty and for these upon whom rests the responsibility of electing to fail to elect is to be derelict almost to the pain of criminality It certainly needs no ghost from the grave to tell us that |
