A t framework of pipes and 1- chicken wire has resulted in a j. crystal tower of beauty, all f ice. - ''' IN 1953 Jack's son Mike, ,!- called his dad to come outside j . to the yard to see the ice trees '-' which had been made during the night with water from a i hose, freezing on the high t weeds. i- From that time on, Mr. Steed, with the help of his family has worked on the rf construction of framework to . help nature in forming this beautiful ice formation. ONLY ONE year the project ; failed because of a mild I winter. One year Mr. Steed r said that his. wife Edith, son Michael and daughter Patsy had tried cake coloring on the ice, bur this was unsatisfac-. unsatisfac-. tory, so now they put a red spotlight on the spectacular - tower of ice. The spotlights make a beautiful color on the ice which passersby and neighbors may view. Every day and evening, ' people will stop to enjoy and often taken pictures of this very magnificent tower of ice. Jack Steed has become well known for his ice sculptures each winter. His Farmington home is visited by many to enjoy Mother Nature's handiwork. THIS WINTER has given more time than usual for the ice to form and remain intact with the fantastic shapes which form. It is estimated that between 8 to 10 tons of ice are on this frame, which is on the south side of the Steed - home at 79 South 100 East, Farmington. Mr. Steed was born in Canada and the family moved to Farmington in 1918 where he has lived ever since and attended the Davis County schools. "AS THE Christmas season comes nearer each year, Jack begins making plans for his annua special project. For 45 years he has donned a Santa Claus suit as one of the faithful faith-ful helpers of Santa Claus throughout the county. He delights young and old, visiting many shut-ins to give them a bit of fun and pleasure of this season. He also assists friends and neighbors in many ways when he can. MR. STEED is retired from Standard Oil, having worked in the Salt Lake City area, kj |
