brilliant for a momect but olten succeeded by gloom or darkneHs and sometimes by destruction The many thousands who have been familiar with the columns ol THE HERALD must have gathered from our notices of tho great industries of South Bend that the Studebaker Brothers whose MAMMOTH WAGON AXD CARRIAGE FACTORIES FAC-TORIES enjoy the precedence of the world that these Brothers we say possess in an extraordinary degree those characteristics which form the elements ele-ments and lead to toe realizuion of the science of which we now speak Sons of a wagon maker whose idea I reached far beyond that actual commanded com-manded by his meager fortune what payhological conjunctions produced those singular corellations manifested in the progeny we know not Certain Cer-tain it is that the late John Studebaker Studeba-ker was not only thy putative but real father of the STUDEBAKER WAGON as well as of the STDDEBAKER BROTHEBS whose names in connection connec-tion with their great industry and aa men cf thought and action are known throughout our own country and in many other paits of the civilized world In them the theory of hereditary hered-itary transmissions is illustrated and confirmed sand in their career the science of success established one of its moat remarkable triumphs They have proved that they possess that i gumption or capacity which as we have said adapts means to ends I This is a point which a it has quite a universal bearing we desire to place in a conspicuous light In this connection con-nection it is unimportant whether th Studebaker Brothers were sons of poverty or wealth whether in their boyhcod they worked fur one or twenty ehillinga per day whether they lived on mush and milk or guncotton gun-cotton and electricity whether they learned Latin or hammered on the anvil The astronomical calculation of Eittenhoube sere equally correct and important wbetber made on the beam of his plow while his team was breathing or on paper bearing the anus of t King George the III so the achievements of the Studebaker Brothers life uualtereJ by influences of whatever kind except those which make a part of their history That is ito i-to say They never claimed to do anything beyond their capacity They always performed in the best manner whatever they proposed to do Whatever they promised they performed per-formed to that same degree of exactness exact-ness to which they held others accountable ac-countable Honesty they adopted asa principle which is i far above the usual commercial commer-cial policy Excelsior fans been the point towards to-wards which their vision ha ever been directed and LABOR OMNIA ViNOiThas not only been their motto but their rule of action In tel ctine their point of excel i no they valued tnt goad > utor pleased with the better but aimed at the best Modestly conscious of that power which holds methods and result in equipoise they have preferred to all other that praise commanded by their works and have sought only that applause ap-plause which merit elicits from an appreciative ap-preciative public Thus has their advance been rapid and almost pbe nominal while in their history the science ot success has received a new illustration and may claim another victory No cue will claim that to cake a wa on is the end and ultimate aim of human endeavor To lead however in the great industry to make the best or even to he foremost among the best ia i quite another thing To know surely that THE STUDEBAKER WAGONs Is the model of the world and that to reach its point of perfection ia the anxious hope of all competitors is something of which to be proud and the fact leads at once to that PHILOSOPHY OF ADVERTISING Which the Studebaker Brother have mastered and made plain Plato himself him-self whose great mind bwayed the world of thought twentyfour can tunes ago would have given his lopes of immortality for such a solu tion of this great philosophy as has been achieved by the wagonmakera of South Bend And still it is as simple and easy aB an elementary problem in Euclid The propositon is this Given a wagon emodying all the combinations ot a superior construction and public consisting of farmers planters freighters and till others needful of BO great a blessing bless-ing what shall bring producer and consumer into relations mutually beneficial ben-eficial The answer was plain and unequivocal unequiv-ocal consisting of two simple words printers nk And here cornea in very naturally a summation of the PHILOSOPHY OF ADVERTISING f As understood and illustrated by the I Btudebakerfi First of all they pay a fair price or what they get and of course get the best They never mislead the public but speak in their advertisements aa candidly can-didly and truthfully as they would in a contract legally signed and sealed They neither undervalue nor depreciate depre-ciate the works of their competitors but refer simply to the merits of their own products which justify the claim of equality with the best at least This is a great point and is worthy of universal imitation They comprenend the iatelligence study the wants and respect tbe judgment of that public with whom they desire to communicate and in deal Thus are ettiblishcd a mutuality mutu-ality of interests Bud confidential ze lationa of a most desirable order The wonderful facilities and marvelous mar-velous appliances possessed by the Studebaker Brothers for siaking the most complete wagons at the least possible cost have been frequently ana rally noticed in these columns It would therefore seem to be almost a work of supererogation to pursue tbe subject further and yet the growtn of the gigantic concern in all of its departments ia i so constant and go extraordinary as to excite curio Hy and justify remark
