Show CONVENTIONS Proceedings at the Connty and District Conventions of the Peoples Party Harmonious Deliberations and Unanimous Nominations At 11 oclock on Saturday morning morn-ing agreeable to a call a county convention of the Peoples Party to nominate certain county and territorial terri-torial officers and to elect delegates to other conventions council district and one representative district dis-trict which were to follow respectively respect-ively the county convention at which nominees for councilors and representatives to the next Territorial Terri-torial Legislature were to be selected se-lected It will be recollected that in the selection of councilors Salt Lake Davis and Tooele Counties are placed together and in the selection selec-tion of representatives Salt Lake Davis and Morgan are joined This accounts for the necessity of two other conventions after that of the county With this explanation we give below the business details of the three conventions in the order in which they occurred COUNTY CONVENTION The meeting was called to order by Col J R Winder who nominated nomi-nated Hon John T Caine for president presi-dent pro tern The nomination carried car-ried Mr Caine thanked the convention con-vention for the honor conferred D Bockholt Esq was made temporary tem-porary secretary Mr T B Lewis moved that a committee of five on credentials be appointed and on the motion being carried the chair appointed ap-pointed Messrs T B Lewis Henry McEwan J Rawlins F Cope and Mrs E B Wells a committee to examine ex-amine credentials While the committee was out Mr Thomas Taylor was called on for a speech and he responded briefly referring re-ferring to the duties of the convention conven-tion Mr A Gardiner was called for a speech but strongly desired to be execused Mr A M Musser was next called for and referred to the remarks of Mr Taylor supporting them and followed them by others of a like character Mr Joseph E Taylor responded to a repeated call for remarks and spoke briefly The committee on credentials here entered and reported the following entitled to seats the report being accepted and adopted A M Mus ser Theodore vicepresident Archibald Gardiner Gardi-ner second vicepresident Jos S Rawlins chaplain Bishop Thomas Taylor sergeantatarms George B Bailey The organization being complete prayer was offered by the chaplain after which the president briefly explained the business which the convention had been called to trans actto nominate candidates for the several offices to be filled at the approaching general election and to > appoint delegates to the council and representative district conventions conven-tions to be held immediately after the adjournment of the county convention con-vention The official announcement of the election was then read and the nomination of candidates commenced com-menced It was decided on motion of Mr Joseph E Taylor that the nominations nomina-tions be made in open convention which was done with the following result Commissioners to Locate University Univer-sity LandsLewis S Hills John VanCott John S Rowberry Territorial Superintendent of District Dis-trict SchoolsJohn Taylor County Selectman to fill the un expired term of Samuel E Bennion For this office three nominations were made F Armstrong received 22 votes opposed 27 The name of Joseph S Rawlins was then put and lost A Gardiner received 30 votes and was declared elected The nomination of Archibald Gardiner was made unanimous For Superintendent of District Schools for Salt Lake County T B Lewis Mr H Dinwoodey then made the following motion I move that we now proceed to the appointment of thirtytwo delegates to represent this county in r i < the council and representative district conventions to oe held this day to nominate councilors and I representatives to the legislative i assembly on the following basis Salt Lake City Precincts First 3 Second 3 Third 3 Fourth 2 Fifth 3 Country Precincts Mountain Dell Sugar Hou3e and Farmer 1 Mill Greek 2 East Mill Creek and Bit Cottonwood 1 South Cottonwood and LTaion 2 Little Cottonwiod Granite Silver Butler and Sandy 2 Draper 1 Herri man Bingham i South Jordan and Riverton 1 West Jordan 1 North Jordan Granger Brighton and Pleasant Green 1 Hunter and North Point 1 At Large 5 and that the delegations of the several sev-eral divisions consult together and nominate their own delegates This being agreed to the several delegations thus nominated from the precincts to the other conventions conven-tions were accepted The present time and the day of election The convention then adjourned sine die COUNCIL DISTRICT CONVENTION The meeting was called to order by Hon John T Caine who nominated nom-inated Mr T B Lewis for president pro tern of the convention The nomination was unanimous Mr A M Musser was chosen temporary I secretary A committee of five on credentials creden-tials consisting of Messrs Thos Taylor W W Galbraith F A Cooper Coo-per John T Caine DeLaMar was appointed The committee reported the names of those entitled to seats which was adopted and stands as follows Salt Lake County First PrecinctRoyal and P De La Mar of Tooele and Peter Barton of Davis were chosen vicepresidents The convention decided to make the nomination of four councilors in the open convention which was done as follows Salt Lake County Joseph Smith Daniel H Wells John T Caine Davis and Tooele Counties Peter Barton The nominations were unanimous The convention then adjourned sine die REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICT CONVENTION CON-VENTION The meeting being called to order or-der T B Lewis was made president A M Musser secretary Arthur Stayner vicepresident Jesse Haven second vicepresident Tooele County having retired from the proceedings and the representatives representa-tives from Morgan entering this convention it was decided that the delegates of Morgan be placed on the roll and that those for Tooele be erased and that on this basis the convention proceed t j business The names of these added from Morgan were Jesse W Haven and Lyman W Porter The temporary organization was made the permanent Davis and Morgan Counties were allowed one representative in the Legislature and Salt Lake five With this understanding a committee of nine 1 M > 1 was appointed to select persons for representatives and report the same to the convention the committee being Jos E Taylor Henry Din woodey Alex McRae John Kirk man Mrs E B Wells Lyman W Porter Chester Call Jos S Rawlins Raw-lins and Eobt Pixiun At the call of the convention speeches were made by Mr Jesse W Haven Mr Caine and Mrs Elizabeth Howard all being brief and pointed Mr Stayner was called upon but declined The committee after being out a short time returned and reported i the following names of persons selected se-lected as those best fitted to be the nominees of the Peoples Party to the approaching legislative assembly as-sembly Salt Lake County John Henry Smith Hosia Stoutt James Sharp John Jaques and C W Penrase Morgan and Davis Counties Samuel Francis The report was received and the names voted upon severally the nominations being unanimously sustained It was moved that Tooele County appoint two members Davis County two members and Morgan County one to meet with the Central Committee Com-mittee of Salt Lake County and constitute a joint Central Committee Commit-tee for representative and council districts with authority to call joint conventions The motion was put and carried Mr Call moved that the delegation delega-tion allotted to each county in the Joint convention be proportioned upon the vote of the Peoples Party at the erection next preceding the convention The motion was lost Adjourned sine die |
