Show PEACE ARRNGEDEN r4 The Union and Northern Pacific Paci-fic Companies Fix Matters New York nThe past few days there have been several meetings meet-ings in this city of officers of the Northern Pacific Railway company and the Oregon Railway and Navigation Navi-gation company on one aide and the Union Pacific Railway company com-pany on the other with a view to arrange through rates and dividing territory and harmonizing interests in various commercial territories jointly reached by the two systems The final meeting yesterday resulted resul-ted in a satisfactory arrangement to both companies covering a term of years The chief points are substantially sub-stantially as follows Firstonthe completion com-pletion of the Northern PacificBail road to Little Blackfoot Montana Territorya point about 48 miles west of Helena where it intercepts the Utah andNorthern and which point will be reached sometime in July the Northern Pacific railroad will lay a third rail between Helena and Little Blackfoot the Utah and Northern will also lay a third rail between Little Blackfoot and Butte City 51 miles thus giviug each line through rail connection with the most important cities of Montana The distance from Chicago to Helena via the Northern Pacific rail road will be 1560 miles by Union Pacific 1957 miles The distance from Chicago to Butte by the Morthern Pacific will be 1648 miles by the Union Pacifi 1858 miles Second The Oregon Short Line will be extended to Snake River where it will be met by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company and where the business of the Pacific Pa-cific coast will be interchanged Third Upon the junction of the Oregon Short Line with the Oregon RaIlway and Navigation Company at Snake River freight between the Pacific coast and Salt Lake will be interchanged by the new route Fourth Freight between Color ada and the Pacific coast will also be interchanged by the new route Fifth Rates between all eastern points and Portland Oregon shall be the same as between the same eastern points and San Francisco Sixth Rates of freight between the Pacific coast and points in Montana Mon-tana shall be the same as rates from St PaulA Paul-A representative for the Northern Pacific says the opening of that road into Montana will make a large reduction re-duction in the rates of freight and fare to all important points in that Territory |
