Show VMS: Good Use Of The Bench By DAVE WIGHAM Friday night was a perfect example of how to use your bench strength to the best ad- -vantage possible as Coach Jim Cleverly used seven players to offset a fine performance by two Ben Lomond players. FIVE VIKING players came close to the double figure mark while the entire Scot attack was centered around their two stars Dave Jennings and Mark Quayle. For the Vikes, Kevin Walker had 18, Mark Lalli 13, Kevin Hess II, Dave Pearce 8 and Tim Eden 7 to lead the balanced Viking attack. If nothing else, the Scots learned that you can't win a ball game by fouling the Vikes. From the charity stripe the Vikes were 19 of 26. THE LEAD see-sawed back and forth in the first half, but then the Vikings took control of the game by outscoring their opponents 13-6 in the third period. The game was quite a contrast con-trast in one aspect, with both teams playing tight zone defenses, it was interesting to see how the other attacked it. THE SCOTS decided to work the ball into their big man Jennings who responded with 22 points while the Vikes relied on the long range shot from Kevin Walker. When the opposing op-posing team goes into the zone defense, it usually marks the entrance of the Vikings long range attack led by Mark Lalli. Lalli did enter the game and did score well but the majority of his points were from the foul line. AT THE outset of the game, it looked as if the Vikes were still thinking about their game last week as they were very careless with the ball and at times seemed to be trying to give the Scots the game. At halftime Coach Cleverly must have reminded them that their game with Clearfield was history his-tory and that they better settle down and play or they would lose again. The Vikes took that advice to heart as they came out smoking to start the second half. Ben Lomond meanwhile was still trying to figure a way to stop the Vikings outside shooting without conceding the inside game. WALKER was his usual self-scoring, either inside or outside; he is fast becoming one of the best players offensively offen-sively in the area. With his leaping ability and soft touch jump shot Kevin can drive opponents op-ponents nuts with his repertoire reper-toire of shots, he also has the ability to play either a guard or forward. Last week Coach Cleverly commented that he should have substituted more than he did, so he took his own advice and kept his players fresh during this game. VIEWMONT is one of the only teams in the region who can afford to go to their bench for help, as they have about 10 or 11 players who can play ball for them. The win was a must for the Vikes in order to stay tied with two other squads for the league lead. It also puts them on a collision course with Lay-ton Lay-ton and Clearfield to decide the championship, dw |
