Show McKay: Loyalty! To His Players By PETE FRITCHIE No one would deny that John McKay is a capable football foot-ball coach, but his loyalty to his players might sometimes be overdone. AND THE question in the Tampa Bay area this year is whether that has cost the Bucs a division title. McKay has stuck with Doug Williams fanatically this year. Some feel it's because of phony race accusations. DOUG IS black and McKay is apparently out to prove critics cri-tics are racist and he is unbiased. un-biased. That seems a bit much; even Terry Bradshaw was criticized widely a few years ago. It probably helped make him better. IN WILLIAMS' case, McKay has had Chuck Fusina on the bench, constantly, even when obvious goofs and mental men-tal lapses cost the Bucs games. Williams has a very strong arm and pulls off some sensa tional pass completions an m at least one game ;h ' ae gained over 400 yards. BUT HE HAS thrown to h . other team's players f i ! closing seconds, gotten , -used about whereth? 1 too often mtssedwide-op j ce.vers and had mekmc "I mental lapses all season I has too frequently passed poorly. (His receivers h, also been poor at times ) e His Buc teammates are noi so dumb they don't see h things. That has affected ' spirit and drive. But McK ,? seems to think he's fighting civil rights battle with the cri tics, in refusing to take Wit hams out and giving Fusina a chance. |
