Show Davis Commission Awards Contract I On Public Defender L By MARK D. MICKELSON FARMINGTON The Davis County Commission has awarded the Layton law firm Stephen. I. Oda, Tom Jones . and Scott W. Holt a two year public defender contract with the county for their $62,960 bid. ACTING PUBLIC Defender Loren Martin lost the bidding after proposing a one year salary sal-ary of $47,000 County Com. Ernest Eberhard said Tuesday the lowest bid from Salt Lake Atty. H. Delbert Welker, was not accepted because Atty. Welker's office was outside of Davis County. Mr. Welker also works alone and the commissioner com-missioner said the county is looking for a law firm to do the job. COUNTY CLERK Rodney Walker noted that the commis sion has extensively reviewed the resumes of the applicants , before making a decision. Attorneys Oda, Jones and Holt, in accepting the contract, con-tract, agree to serve the county , for a two year period. Their bids were $32,980 for services in 1981 and $35,980 for 1982, for a total of $62,960 for two years. COM. EBERHARD said the bid does not include juvenile court service. He told the commission and the audience that the county does not know how they will handle public defender work for the juveniles. ASKED IF bids would be accepted for a separate juvenile juve-nile defender, the commissioner commission-er again said the county was unsure and would look into it as soon as possible. He concluded, saying the bid from the three Layton-based Layton-based attorneys was not the lowest bid accepted, but that County Atty. Rodney Page had "concurred" with the commission's decision. j OUTGOING DEFEN0ER '('-' ' Martin did not attend theTues- i . ; day commission meeting, but had said earlier in the year that more money would be needed in the future for the public defender's de-fender's office to be maximally efficient. y Late last summer the com- mission approved an addition- L al $4,000 to be used by the pub- 'nV lie defender's office for an in- ri! creasing caseload, which Atty. . ar Martin said had become a sPe problem. "WE WOULD have liked to have had him (Martin) stay," 10n 1 Com. Morris Swapp said in a " 1 n telephone conversation with rti the Clipper afterwards.
