Show Proper Use Of Campbell? The current coaching philosophy philo-sophy of popular Bum Philips, of the Houston Oilers, is one of the controversies of pro football foot-ball today. The Oilers are successful suc-cessful and could conceivably go all the way. But they're doing it by over-using Earl Campbell. CAMPBELL, the best rusher in the game today, is a phenomenon. But he is used after the game is already won, to run out the clock, for the last few plays of the first half, etc. How long can any back, even one that tough, take all that? Even pro football TV commentators com-mentators are asking that question. Earl seems indestructible indes-tructible now, but every man is destructible and it's only a question of time, before Campbell Camp-bell is burnt out at the pace Bum is using him. YOUNG superstars like Campbell often themselves take pride in staying in the game, and appearing tough, or indestructible. But they are too inexperienced to know. Runners like Ricky Bell and Tony Dorsett certainly take care of themselves, by contrast. con-trast. They have never run with the reckless abandon of Campbell in the pro games, and sometimes even appear to dog it. TO SEE Campbell used on all running plays in series after series is disquieting. That's asking too much, even of an Earl Campbell, even if he is willing to do it because he doesn't know better. Phillips should ease off, and be more considerate of Earl's future. |
