The Falcons could be the darkhorse in their league this season. Ay DAVE WIGHAM 'CLEARFIELD Clear-ketball Clear-ketball teams have always had a certain mystique about them. People are always commenting comment-ing on their patient style of play and aggressive defense. THAT MYSTERY surrounds sur-rounds this year's group of Falcons, and Coach Hansen and his staff once again have molded some super individual talent into a fine team. "Sure we won't be considered a favorite favo-rite in the region. But the guys - play very well together and we could very well be the dark horse of the league." Craig went on to add that Roy and Bonneville will be tough with their returning players. He looks to Layton as being stronger when league rolls around and ended up by saying that it's always tough to beat Sky View, especially up in Cache Valley. CLEARFIELD does have some fine talent this season, but again the lack of height just might be their downfall. In the Davis County tournament they fell to a much taller View-mont View-mont team but not before they had played head-to-head with the Vikings for over three periods. Even though they give away inches the Falcons don't back away from anyone when it comes to defense. Even against the giants of Viewmont they played a tough man-toman and stayed right with them. Defense is a word that most high school players have nightmares about they don't like the word or the effort. Defense De-fense at Clearfield, though, is a way of life. HEADING THE list of fine talent this season is senior forward for-ward Troy Nye. Without question ques-tion one of the better players in the area. Troy is a great shooter shoo-ter who has the ability to jump with the best of them. The Falcons Fal-cons look to this guy for the big play and he usually responds. Senior Dewey Pratt gets the call at the other forward spot and Coach Hansen feels this youngster is one of the most consistant players around. "He'll give 100 percent at all times at both ends of the floor. Despite his 6'2" frame he has an uncanny ability to rebound with the bigger guys." IN THE middle of the floor will be 6'5" senior Mike Johnson, John-son, who isn't afraid of anyone or anything. Get the ball to Mike and he'll find a way to get the shot off with a high success ratio. Coach Hansen feels that Mike is the most improved player on the squad who work ed hard during the off season and is now enjoying the benefits. be-nefits. The guard line for the Falcons Fal-cons is small but extremely quick. With Fred Cook at one spot and Mike Masero at the other Coach Hansen likes to put fullcourt pressure on the opposition's guards. Fred is super quick and comes up with the big steals when they are needed. Mike is a smooth ball handler who sets up the offense and runs the show. VON GARDINER, Craig Suekawa and Kevin Bitton are ready and willing to come in off the bench for the Falcons. Gardiner Gar-diner is usually the first one off the bench and he adds another scoring threat. He hit two long range bombs in the closing moments mo-ments of the Viewmont game. Suekawa, (who usually spells Masero), is another small guard who sets up the offense and runs the show. Bitton is a junior jumping jack who likes to go to the boards hard. Coach Hansen, and his staff, have always come up with a winner at the school and this year should be no exception excep-tion to the rule. He has some fine talent who work together hard at all times. In these days it's refreshing to see a high school team play defense with the enthusiasm and desire the Falcons have. |
