Show Admit Soccer Pulls Off Major Upset The South Davis soccer team ousted the hottest team in the state from Open Cup Competition. Dave Wigham . Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL - The South Davis soccer team pulled off a major upset last Saturday when their first team knocked off the highly regarded Alemania team from Salt Lake 3-0. FOR WEEKS the Salt Lake papers and other media outlets have been building up the Ale-mania Ale-mania club. This Salt Lake based team even went to Denver, Colo, and won a big prestigious presti-gious tournament there and are the best bet to win the league title this year. However the local side handed Alemania Iheir first defeat of the year. The loss won't appear on the league standings though since this game was in the Utah Open Cup tournament. tourna-ment. Alemania may go on to win the league and other honors but they won't win the Open Cup thanks to the play of the South Davis Club. 'I HE SCORE was lied 0 0 at halflime but then the South Davis team took control. First Joey Walls scored and then he set up both Kent Gines and Reed Hansen for the other two scores. Meanwhile the local side put up a strong defense that didn't allow one of the most potent scoring teams in the area a goal. The local side, coached by professional Billy McNichol, used all of the 15 players that arc allowed by league rules. All 15 contributed to this victory. The defense played extremely well in recording the shutout. The halfbacks, Joe Palmer, Kim Bullock, Kurt Dychcs, Matt Liting, Ron Wallace and Steve Hogan, made the job easier for the fullbacks. Then in turn the fullback line. Kevin Liston, lilakc Steed, Dave F ames. Kevin Howard and Jeff Maughan made the job of goal keeper, Dave Wigham easier.
