Band i i Four local students are members of the Brigham Young University Cougar Band or Cougarettes which made the second consecutive appearance at the Holiday l Bowl in San Diego on Dec. 21. THEY ARE Bountiful High .; School graduates Colleen Hamilton and Susan Barrus, and Viewmont High School graduates Colette Maloy and . Carl Furner. Miss Hamilton, a sax player in the band, and a junior in elementary education, is the daughter of Eugene and Car-ma Car-ma Hamilton. Miss Barrus, a sophomore and member of the band's flag corps, is the daughter of Robert and Joy Barrus. i MISS MALOY, a flute : player and freshman in nurs- ing, is the daughter of Elwood : and Colleen Maloy; and Mr. Furner, a trumpet player and .i a freshman in pre-pharmacy, ; is the son of Blair and Joan Furner. The 166-member band per-j per-j formed a special eight-minute ' halftime show of the BYU-In-diana football game broad-', broad-', cast nationally on the Mizlou television network. The Cougar football team went ; undefeated this season and is j ranked number nine on na-'' na-'' tional polls the highest ever for a BYU football team. THE BAND also performed at a special meeting of LDS Church General Authorities and members of the church living in San Diego area on the morning of the game. Under the direction of Dr. Daniel Bachelder, the band performs in a "corps" style of marching, with members having memorized each number. A group of 24 flag carriers add color to the show, along with a march-dance march-dance troupe consisting of 12 young women known as the Cougarettes. IN November, the band made its major trip of the year to play for the BYU-Long Beach State game at Anaheim Stadium. It also presented a parade and special concert at Disneyland. |
