Show By DAVE WIGHAM WOODS CROSS - This group of female athletes at Woods Cross have made their names known while competing compet-ing in all sports these past few seasons. They have accomplished ac-complished many fetes that will probably never be duplicated. THERE IS still one goal that they have never attained. at-tained. A state title in basketball. In both their sophomore and junior seasons the gals won the region title and went into the state event with high hopes. As sophomores they lost by one point In the semifinals and claimed third place. Last season they were one of the favorites but didn't do well at all in the tournament, tour-nament, an event they would just as soon forget. THIS SEASON they are back as seniors and are anxious an-xious to get that elusive state crown. Do they have the talent? Well in preseason the clubs getting a lot of attention are Skyline and Clearfield in the 4A ranks and the Wildcats have already downed both these clubs. They have also knocked off Jordan and Davis of the 3A classifications. Six seniors have been aiuuiiu for those two previous seasons and are anxious to prove that they are a better club than the one that lost two in the state meet a year ago. THOSE SENIORS are Cheryl Cleverly, Carolyn Martineau, Dana Wilson, Becky Petersen, Michelle Cottle and Chim Creer. All of these girls have been a major part in the prominence of athletics at the school. They compete in all sports, they just won a state crown in volleyball. These athletes have played together since their freshman season at the school and they have had the same coach throughout their careers. Deb Peel has guided the club the past three years and she along with the girls look for better things this season. JUNIORS ON the varsity club this season are Geri Jardine, Jill Trujillo, Lane Wickizer and Dawn Bell. Sophomore Tori Weight rounds out the varsity team. Cleverly, Martineau, Petersen, Peter-sen, Creer and Jardine are the starting five but Coach Peel has the depth to go to the bench in a hurry and they don't lose that much. The Cats are quick, not big, who like to fast break and play a tough zone defense. THE WILDCATS know they are in a tough region this season, a new alignment for them but they also know they have some top notch players. As mentioned this group has won a lot of honors for the school, but the basketball title has eluded them for two years. Maybe the third time is the charm. They certainly have the people to do it. |
