The response from the 325 singers was typical of their unusual rapport with their director - tone, as well as faces took on added dimensions. PREPARING FOR their approaching April 28 "Spring Pops Concert," the members gather at regular Wednesday evening rehearsal in the U of U chemistry building. A visitor visi-tor to such a rehearsal is impressed by the group's beautiful tone, which is accurately ac-curately displayed by the acoustics of the lecture room. "This group is only one year old. They sound like they've sung together for years!" is a typical observation observa-tion of the listener. The Chorale is perhaps the newest of Utah's choirs. ORGANIZED IN February 1978 to collaborate with the Utah Symphony and Ballet West in their performances of Orff's "Carmina Burana" and Copland's "Songs Of The Valley," it has grown from the 80 voice size imposed by theatrical space to its present gigantic proportions. Critics of the large-choir image will be pleasantly surprised to discover that with the Jay Welch Chorale musicality is magnified rather than impaired. im-paired. Conductor and musical director. Dr. Jay E. Welch, a native Salt Laker, has an impressive record as both a choral and orchestral conductor con-ductor in this country and in Europe. HE IS A professor of music Davis County residents who will sing in a Spring Pops concert with the Jay Welch Chorale on April 28 include, front 1 to r, Glen McKenzie, Calene Brown, Janne Webster, Bea Oldham, Irene Brown. Center, Phoebe Summerhays, Mary Landen, Colleen Poul-sen, Poul-sen, Harriett Barton. Back, Harold Drawe, Joe Summerhays, Vaughn Wassam, Jay Daley, and Karla Thornton. at the U of U, conductor of the SL Repertory Orchestra (with whom the Chorale has performed per-formed twice), former director direc-tor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Salt Lake Oratorio Society, and founder and former director of the Mormon Mor-mon Youth Symphony and Chorus. He has also been guest conductor with the Utah Opera Co. The vast experience and musicianship of both Dr. Welch and numerous members of his Chorale will combine to create a memorable memora-ble evening beginning at 8 p.m. on April 28 at Cottonwood Cotton-wood High School, 5715 South 1300 East. THE PROGRAM will include Broadway songs, old sentimental favorites and patriotic pa-triotic rousers. Tickets are available at the ZCMI Stores and William B.
