Show Local military maneuvers ROSWELL, N.M. Aaron M. Hendrick, a college freshman at New Mexico Military Institute, is one of 100 cadets who carried a torch tor-ch one of the 185 miles from Santa Fe to Roswell to open NMMI's Centennial year. To be eligible to participate, cadets had to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test, have at least a 2.5 grade average on a 4.0 scale, and an A in deportment. Hendrick is the son of Maj. and Mrs. Myron A. Hendrick of Bountiful. The Centennial torch run began at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, when Gov. Bruce King declared this the NMMI Centennial year. NMMI officials, staff, faculty and alumni carried the torch the first 85 miles from the governor's office in Santa Fe to a point 10 miles north of Vaughn on U.S. 285. A relay of 100 cadets carried it the remaining distance to a point one mile north of the NMMI campus. The next-to-last runner arrived about 11:15 a.m. Saturday. At that point the last runner was relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community Com-munity College of the Air Force. Laken is the son of Konrad O. Laken of 165 W. 250 N., Clearfield and Verlene R. Laken, 235 W. State Street, Farmington. He is a 1990 graduate of Bountiful Boun-tiful High School. Army National Guard Private Troy K. Turner has completed the heavy-wheel vehicle mechanic course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the course, students were instructed to perform maintenance and assist in the repair of heavy duty vehicles and associated equipment. Turner is the son of Lester S. Turner and stepson of Susan P. Turner, 128 S. 850 E., Centerville. He is a 1990 graduate of View-mont View-mont High School. Army Reserve Private Roger I. Packer has completed basic training train-ing at Fort Knox, Ky. During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, and Army history and traditions. He is the son of Ronald D. and DeAnna W. Packer, 430 E. 2050 S., Bountiful. He is a 1990 graduate of Bountiful Boun-tiful High School. joined by the entire corps of 775 cadets, who jogged down North Main Street to the NMMI campus. In a ceremony commemorating NMMI's first "100 years of excellence," the torch was used by one of the institute's oldest alumni of record to light a gas flame, which will bum throughout the Centennial year and on special occasions thereafter. Marine Lance Cpl. Shaun J. Stephenson, son of James T. and Geri Stephenson of 3443 S. 1010 W., Bountiful, recently completed the U.S. Army's Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Ga. The three-week course is an extensive, ex-tensive, physically demanding parachute training program. To complete the course, Stephenson had to complete five static-line jumps from fixed wing, high performance per-formance aircraft. After completing the course, Stephenson was authorized to wear the Army's Basic Parachutist Insignia. In-signia. A 1989 graduate of Woods Cross High School, he joined the Marine Corps in July 1989. Airman Konrad E. Laken has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
