Show New City Created; High School Debut Postponed Jan. Jan. 17, 1980 The Granite Board of Education announced that it would open Taylorsville high school on schedule in September of 1980, but would later be forced to postpone that until 1981 when it became clear the Granite School District of- ficials outlined ramifica- tions that competency testing requirements handed down by the state would have on future graduating classes. Jan. 31, 1980 Magna resident Eva won state honors with an essay on freedom of the press that had captured honors in a related contest sponsored by the Green Sheet. Fourteen candidates had qualified for the ballot seeking four posts in West Valley City, facing an in- corporation election on Feb. 26. H. Hiland Kent and Henry H. Price were running for mayor. Mayors of neighboring cities lent their support to proponents of the incorporation and offered expertise of their staffs in helping the city get off the ground if it passed voter scrutiny. Feb. 7, 1980 The Granite Board of Education took action that would delay the opening of Taylorsville high school until 1981, although projections called for completion of the facility in December of 1980. The board felt high school programs could not operate effectively under conditions of a late opening.
