Show Help For Teenagers In Need WEST VALLEY VIEW - Thursday, Jan. 22, 1981 Return To A Normal Family Life Is The Principle Goal Of Utah Girls Village Community by Joni Bradley Think back to the years when you were 14, 15, 16 years old! As we think of those years, we know it is hard being a teenager. Yet, most of us had good homes with loving parents, lot of friends and did well in school. estious parents, scrapes with the law and an overwhelming feeling of worthlessness and apathy. What can you do? Where can you turn for help? Well, up until 1975 there was nowhere a teenage girl could go for help and, if she was in trouble with the law, she went to the detention center. board. The facility itself is located at 5930 So. and 4800 West and was built entirely from private contributions of time, property, and materials. Creating the establishment of Utah Girls Village truly a community effort. Since its opening the village has responded to a variety of needs present in young girls, many of whom are abused, abandoned, ungovernable and delinquent. The girls who come to Girls Village are anywhere from 13 to 17 and are referred through the Juvenile Justice Department or the Division of Family Services. Private enrollment is also accepted, however, and the waiting list is long. Unlike many other institutions, the girls at the village must give their own consent in order to be there. The state contributes toward the cost of each girl who becomes a ward of the state. Most of the funds, to run s the facility, come from private or grants from business. This past year the facility used money that was originally earmarked for the building of a new center for the care of the girls. However, they do hope to have a second home open by Mothers Day this year. One big goal of Girls Village is to teach the girls how to live and work in the community at the same time they are receiving special help and counseling at the home. Dr. Barbara W. Snow is executive director of the treatment program, but treatment is directly administered by a professional couple. The couple now at the village is Matthew and Dannyette Kaopua and they live with the girls a day. But those formative years are hard. There is always peer pressure to be and do what the in group wants, or, to do what your parents want, or, to do what you want. These may be small problems, yet to a teenager they are awesome. Compound these problems with having alcoholic parents, abusive or inc- - There was no alternative. This is of prime importance in helping the girls with necessary behavior changes. The program is to teach these girls new skills to enable them to function adequately in the community and to assist their natural family members in learning methods to further promote their successful adjustment. Emphasis is placed on structure, personal responsibility, and family and community values in an effort to assist these young women in coping more productively with their world. The program also focuses on community involvement.
