They have freshness and new ideas. They're willing to create art and cure cancer," said Larry West, drama faculty member at Weber State College. West is talking about the directors of the One-Act Play Festival to be staged by Weber State Theatre June 3 through 6 at 8 p.m. The plays, to be presented in the Monson Theatre, are student produced, performed and directed. Visitor from Forest Hills, directed by Don G. Bodily, is a comedy about a bride determined not to have a marriage like her parents. Her father, for unknown reasons, locks himself in the bathroom and refuses to come out for her wedding day. Hopscotch Lovers, directed by Troy Klee, is a serious offering, a story of consequences and young love gone wrong. Kathleen McComb directed Hello Out There, a play about the "little man" who is beaten by society (or is he?) in the end. Spotlight Tuesday, June 3 Dance meeting A meeting of all students interested in the new dance teaching minor and the elementary education concentration in dance will be held in the dance studio in the Swenson Gym at 10:30 a.m. The state board of education certified the teaching minor in February, and the program will be explained in detail by Michele Rusinko, director of dance. Play The One-Act Play Festival, directed, produced and performed by Weber State College theatre department students, opens a four -day run in the Monson Theatre at 8 p.m. The plays alternate performance dates. Tuesday's program will repeat on Thursday and Wednesday's play schedule is repeated on Friday. Admission for Weber State College students is $1 for all performances. Wednesday, June 4 Electronic music demo Technological advances in music will be the topic of discussion and demonstration in the Electronic Music Seminar to be held in the Austad Auditorium at 8:30 a.m. and then repeated again at 9:30 a.m. Tom Carruth of Guitar City will discuss synthesizers and how they interface with computers. Plans include using large screen projection for easy viewing. The public is invited to attend. Monday, June 10 Art exhibit An exhibition of the two and three-dimensional media works of graduating art students from WSC will be on display in the Collett Gallery through Thursday, June 13. The selections were made by the students after reading and discussing 20 plays. The directors were chosen to be in the advanced directing class taught by West on the basis of their past work and creative ideas. "This has been a real challenge for the directing students," said West. "For the first time, they are placed in a position where they must collaborate with designers and technicians to create a polished theater performance. "Theater is much more than just an actor on the stage. There are lights, scenery, costumes, props and a hundred other things a director has to worry about to make the play come off successfully. Most of these students are doing extremely well," he said. These three plays along with Lovers, Winners will be presented Tuesday and Thursday. June 4 and 6, the curtain will rise on four other plays: Ball Boys, Architruc, Touch the Bluebird's Song, and This is the Rill Speaking. Touch the Bluebird's Song tells what happens after two people have been separated. A young navy man visits his student girlfriend and they try to recapture the love they once had before they changed. This is the Rill Speaking, a play written by a 13-year-old boy about the hum-drum of small town life, was directed by Shawn Nottingham. In the face of death's final reality, the little things-friendship, games and tenderness (however brief) are all we have. So says Architruc, an Americanized French farce, directed by Karen Nielsen.
