Show Signpost Tuesday, June 3, 1986 11 News Briefs Honor society honors 57 The Phi Sigma Iota international foreign language honor society inducted 10 faculty members, one honorary member and 46 students last night. The foreign language department is sponsoring the Kappa Epsilon Chapter, the 150th chapter. Opening remarks were by Dr. Lee Walser, chair of the foreign language department. Dr. Jeffery D. Stokes conducted the initiation ceremony; and Dr. Sherwin Howard, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, concluded the ceremony. Faculty members who were inducted include Dr. Jean Andra, Dr. Robert Belka, Dr. Gary M. Godfre, John Kartchner, Kazuko Monobe, Myumi Mukai, Anthony Spanos, Dr. Jeffery D. Stokes, Lucie Swanson and Dr. Lee Walser. Student members who were inducted include Wayne F. Adams, Donald H. Beatty, Joni Berger, David R. Benard, Jonna Berryman, Kay Boyce, Allyson Briggs, Helen J. Davis, David Dixon, Bradley Draper, David Felt, Kathryn E. Firth, Corrie Hamblin, Art Hansen and David Hardy; La Mar O. Hill, Janice Hood, Scott Hunter, Lisa Johnson, Valice M. Reception honors retirees Everyone is invited to a reception for those members of the faculty who are retiring this year from the college. It will be held on June 4 from 2-4 p.m. in the UB Skyroom. Those being honored include Kenneth R. Adams, J.' David Hepworth, Robert W. Anderson, Frank S. Austin, Lewis O. Bambrough, La Von B. Carroll, Edward D. Cisowski, David R. Cox, Dorothy S. Draney, Lucy H. Isakson, Jean S. Russell, Dale Silverthorn, Stephen S. Stanford and Genevieve M. Wise. School gives two master's The Combined Master of Education program at Weber State College awarded master's degrees to Kay E. Hunter and Holly Nye Bauman, both of Ogden. Hunter graduated from Weber State in 1980 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. For her master's degree, she completed a thesis titled "Self-Contained Lab for Students with Intellectual Handicaps andor Learning Disabilities." Bauman's emphasis was in vocational education and her master's project was titled "Alternative Education, 1983-84 Graduates Employment Status: Can an Alternative Setting Enhance or Prepare Graduates for Competitive Employment?" Bauman attended Ogden High and earned ' a bachelor degree in physical education from Utah State in 1969. Microbiology Society The Microbiology Society of Weber State College will sponsor two lectures on Friday, June 6 at 11:30 a.m. These will be held in Room 129 of Lind Lecture Hall. Dr. Ray Daynes of the U of U medical school's pathology department will speak on "UV Light and Carcinogens." Dr. David Lowe, also from the same school, will speak on "Molecular Cell Biology in Microbial Pathogenesis." They will also speak on opportunities for graduate school in biomedical science. The public is invited. Alpha Phi Sigma Initiation initiations for AInha Phi Siema. a criminal justice honor society at Weber State, will be held Thursday, June 5, during open hour in Students select role models , The Weber State chapter of Phi Beta Lambda has selected Dr. Rodney H. Brady as their Businessperson of the Year and John A. Lindquist Sr. as their Entrepreneur of the Year for 1986. Phi Beta Lambda, a professional business student organization, chose Brady, former president of WSC and president of Bonneville International Corporation, for his award because of his support of the organization and because of his vast business experience.Brady is also Weber State College's nominee for Utah Businessperson of the Year. Lindquist was chosen for his award because of his vast business experience and community service. He helped organize the Advisory Council to the School of Business as well as promoting the construction of the Wattis business building at the college. He is also involved in banking, insurance, real estate and other business operations. Weber hosts new society Weber State college now hosts one of the 41 nation , wide chapters of the Alpha Delta Mu National Honor Society. The society is for social workers. t Webers chapter, Gamma XI, was officially recognized this March. Dr. Rex R. Ashdown is the' faculty advisor. Student officers include; Lisa Crenshaw, president, i May Harrpo, vice president, and Pattye Welker, secretary. To become a member of Alpha Delta Mu, applicants must have earned at least six semester hours or an equivalent in social work and have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Initiation fees are $20 which entitles the applicant to a lifetime member-. ship. . i The society offers two national scholarships a year which are each worth $1,500. They sponsor a national convention and the Alpha Delta Mu Journal. The telephone lines are staffed by volunteers from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information about CIS, call the number and ask for Kathryn Manning. CIS is sponsored nationally by the National Cancer Institute and locally by St. Benedict's Hospital. Council promotes faculty Several faculty promotions were recently made by the Institutional Council. Those who made full professors were Gary Nielsen (clinical laboratory sciences), Norman Hansen and Elsie Shiramizu (nursing), Jane Ward (radiologic technology),. Clyde Copley (business administration Ronald Mano (accounting), Jean Andra (foreign! languages) and Rondo Jeffery (physics). Associate professorships went to Diane Baughman (nursing), Dan Fuller (economics), James F. Richards (mathematics), Samuel Zeveloff (zoology), Farhang Amiri and Walther Spjedvik (physics), John Nelson (automotive technology), William Clapp (electronic engineering technology) and Kenneth Walter (computer science). Three instructors were made assistant professors. They include Gary White (respiratory therapy), Lael Larsen and Carol Rosenlund (nursing).
