A U.S. presidential election year, as nothing else, wakes up many students to the reality and the importance of political activity and involvement. This year a number of WSC students have already been involved in local, county and national elections. The College Republicans of Weber State participated in a quiet Weber County convention and a relatively quiet state convention with only a few Salt Lake County Young Republicans trying to get more liberalized planks into the Utah Republican platform.Wendy Hunter and Pat Harrison of Weber State College Republicans did attend the Mi- college education provides top occupation placement A college education still provides top job placement possibilities, despite "loose talk" about the "uselessness" of a college degree and "Ph. D's driving taxi cabs," according to G. Homer Durham, Utah Commissioner of Higher Education. "If a college degree is useless, Utah statistics and national experience don't bear it out," Dr. Durham said, noting "the future for college graduates is good." Quoting the Manpower report to the President, Dr. Durham added the employment of professional and technical workers increased more rapidly than any other occupational group during both the 1950's and 1960's. "The proportion of these jobs requiring a college degree will increase to a record high through 1980. Approximately two-thirds of the workers in the professional, managerial, technical category will have college level training in 1980," he said. In Utah the unemployment rate of professional and technical workers averaged 1.6 percent as of July, 1972, compared to a 6.4 percent average for the entire Utah labor force. "This means 1.6 percent of the Utah workers with college degrees could be looking for jobs, only one-fourth of the unemployment rate of other clas-sifcations," the commissioner said. Dr. Durham noted that in singing by elaine robinson To the LDS Institute choruses the start of fall quarter means auditions. Of the five separate groups in which openings are available, two are exclusively female, two exclusively male, with the remaining chorale beingco-educational. According to Ladd R. Cropper, director of the groups, auditions were started last week and will continue through this week. Selection of singers is determined by audition with the exception of the Institute Cho- ami convention as alternate delegates. The Young Democrats of Weber State College - Weber County were also active in local, state and national politics. Most were active on behalf of the candidacy of George Mc-Govern and turned out heavily to their mass meetings capturing over half of the delegate seats in the Weber County Convention for McGovern. Through the efforts of Don Hughes and other Weber State students an anti-Vietnam plank was inserted into the Weber County Platform. At the state Democratic convention the Weber County YD's along with those from the University of Utah were involved in the battle to liberalize the state party platform. addition to employment opportunities for college educated workers, figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics continue to show that the average college graduate earns considerably more during his working lifetime than the average high school graduate -- $607,000 compared with $371,000, a difference of $236,000. "This is not to say," he added, "that a bachelor's degree is required for all useful work. A combined concert at Christmas with neighboring Protestant and Catholic Chorales, and an appearance at the General LDS This caused Weber County party chairman Ray Hansen to say that he would have difficulty running his Weber County candidates on that platform and would consider drawing up his own platform. Weber County YD's were almost successful in ousting several Weber County delegates who they claimed, had been chosen illegally by county chairman Hansen. They continued the ouster movement even after incurring the displeasure of the Utah chairman for McGovern, Dr. Charles Nabors. The subsequent defection from Nabors resulted in defeat as a delegate to the national Democratic convention. The activities of Weber State students haven't stopped and with local, state and national contests and voter registration drives by both parties, the involvement will continue through Nov. 7. If you are interested in joining or working for either of the major college political organizations, see College Republicans President Wendy Hunter or Young Democrats President Frank Hodge.
