Show Chamber of Commerce Report Shows Varied List of Projects Accomplished By Milton K. Moody, Secretaiy At the election held the latter part o January, 1935 the following follow-ing were elected as officers: W. B. Matins, president; W. J. Reich-mann, Reich-mann, vice-president; Milton E. Moody, secretary, and the following follow-ing as board of directors: E. W. Simmons, Lloyd Davis, R. M. Reb-er, Reb-er, Clinton Snow, Edgar Simpson, H. Val Hafen and Maurice Miles. Committees were organized as follows: Federal, E. W. Simmons, " Wm. Brooks, Joseph Milne; mem- bership, Lloyd Davis, G. W. Hail, . D. C. Watson; civic improvements, - R. M. Reber, M. O. Hutchings; " commerce and industry, Clinton Snow; education, Milton E. Moody, Moo-dy, B. Glen Smith, Vernon Wor-then; Wor-then; community health, Dr. W. J. ! Reichmann; publicity, Edgar Simpson; roads, H. Val Hafen, W. - W. Cannon; program, Maurice Miles; executive committee, president pres-ident or vice-president, "secretary and two other members. Board of directors have met during dur-ing the year on the first and third Monday evenings and many special spec-ial meetings between this when occasion arose. The possibility of public meetings held regularly was given attention and attempts made but the attendance was so poor the idea was given up. Membership 'fees were set at $3.00 per individual and $1.00 to be collected for th,e ar-ociated civic clubs. Business memberships member-ships were set at $10.00. Seventeen Seven-teen business memberships were collected at $10.00 each and two at five. Eighty-five individual memberships making a total of 104 for the year. Assumed responsibility to raise money to help representative to get to the monthly meetings of the associated Civic clubs. Other clubs responded to this call and $77.00 was collected. Arranged for and paid for horse and expense for the survey made on the Dixie National forest to determine number of deer and condition of the ranges. Planned and carried out the visit of the legislators to Dixie and to Boulder dam. About 140 legislators leg-islators and wives came and spent two days here. The trip costing this organization $552.33 besides the individual contributions of beds, reduced rates, use of cars etc. Investigated the possibility of a T. B. sanatorium for this section and gave up the program only after af-ter state T. B. association recommended recom-mended hospital for larger city. Gained some good advertising for the winter climate of this section. Committee spent considerable time attempting to create work for college students. Aided the Dixie college in putting put-ting over the Junior College basketball bas-ketball tournament and gave the awards of watch chain fobs made of gold basketballs with name of tournament printed on them. Helped in a small way to send the pixie band to Provo to the state music festival. Helped to obtain pictures and other material in cooperation with Mrs. Wm. Brooks for the Salt Lake Tribune. Aided the City Council to put over water bond election by calling call-ing a public meeting on the subject sub-ject and by personal solicitation. Some members of the board of directors journeyed up the ditch to obtain information needed. Sent a number of resolutions and corresponded to some length on the question of securing soil erosion camp on the Virgin River. Our efforts in this respect seemed to have ifailed but assurances at present seem to indicate that this may come in the near future. Recommended Jos. S. Snow to road commission job. Failed In this but he succeeded in getting a better one as far as he is concerned. concern-ed. Aided in a cleanup campaign and city beautification by getting out handbills and starting propaganda propa-ganda for cleanup. Asked for an investigation at Post office when shortage of funds was declared, which finally resulted result-ed in clearing a party accused. Aided in the purchase of napkins nap-kins for Dixie College Alumni. Spent considerable time and money to get the camp here to work on proposed black rock road and grazing project. This is in the state of Arizona but our local cattlemen and business men are greatly influenced by it. It will result in a better road to Wolf Hole. Prevented the turning over of St. George Camp P. E. 213 to the department of Indian affairs for salvage. This property now belongs be-longs to Sherman Lamb but he has consented that it be used as long as a camp will be maintained here. Committee on civic improvements improve-ments investigated the removal of poles from the street, beautification of court house grounds as a place for tourists to rest. Both of these should be followed up by the new 1 organization. I Encouraged the American Legion Le-gion on their drive for fire fighting equipment. This worthy cause should be given continued support. sup-port. Pushed the program of a CCC camp at Pinto. Checked up on rumor that travel trav-el was being diverted at Boulder to east side of river and thus avoiding St. George. This proved to be more of a rumor than any thing else and both California and Las Vegas pledged support in keeping travel over 91. Cooperated with the city in an attempt to get road commission or other agencies to oil street from curb to curb on the two blocks souh of 91 on Main street. This attempt failed as road commission! stated this was city responsibility. Chamber of Commerce attempted, attempt-ed, by holding a number of meetings, meet-ings, to harmonize the feeling between be-tween the livestock interests, forest for-est service and game committee on the number of deer to be removed re-moved from the Dixie National forests. for-ests. Cooperated with Hurricane to put over Dixie Peach day which resulted in the visit of the governor govern-or and other state officials to the county. The race committee is part of the Chamber of Commerce organization organ-ization so this was organized and responsibility assumed by the committee. com-mittee. Attempted to aid forest service in getting permission to build a reservoir on Maple Flat in Pine Valley canyon. Committee appointed to raise finance for football at the Dixie College for the season. Enough was raised to put over the program pro-gram in a very satisfactory manner. man-ner. Another year should see football foot-ball permanently established. Assisted Associated civic clubs in financing program at Lee's Ferry. Fer-ry. Placed a float in the Armistice day" parade. Baseball controlled by a subcommittee sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce had a very successful year. They won the division and bought and paid for considerable equipment. equip-ment. Suggested that the' tree planting plant-ing program should be in the hands of city rather than the P. T. A. or any committee with less authority than that which the city can give. Anyone who orders trees for others should be able to guarantee guar-antee them. Aided in commencing the Christmas Christ-mas decoration program. This should be increased and decorations decora-tions added for another year. Recommended to Mr. Skilling Post Office employee that Federal building should have offices for at least six or eight federal employees. em-ployees. Aided him in finding available stone for the construction construc-tion of this building. Sponsored Associated Civic club meeting and banquet held here on December 28. At the present time correspondence correspon-dence is being carried on with the Taylor Grazing camp at Cedar City to move some of their men down on Snow Canyon road project pro-ject while the weather will not permit work in Iron county. The new organization should ifollow this up. |
