Show ILLNESS FATAL TO PROMINENTSJOCKMAN Mason Gardner, 46, Died Saturday At Pine Valley; Funeral Services Tuesday. Mason Gardner of Pine Valley died Saturday morning at that place of dilatation of the stomach. He had been in ill health for practically 26 years. Abou't a year ago he underwent a sinus operation opera-tion at Fillmore and had never fully recovered. Mr. Gardner was born July 1, 1886, at Pine Valley, the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Gardner. He received his schooling school-ing at Pine Valley, Cedar City, and graduated from the Brigham Young university in 1904. For several sev-eral years he was bookkeeper for the Startup Candy company at Provo. In 1914 he went on a mission to Holland where he joined John H. Cottam. After a few months the world war broke out and all missionaries in Europe were withdrawn. with-drawn. They assembled in Holland Hol-land for passage to the United States. Three hundred crossed the ocean in an old cattle boat that had been chartered by the church, (Continued on page 7) MASON GARDNER (Continued from page 1) and after a rough passage lasting 15 days landed in Newfoundland. They were then transferred to the states and all missionaries who had not served eighteen months were required to finish their mission in this country. Mr. Gardner labored in the Chicago Chi-cago mission for several months until ill health forced his release. He returned to Pine Valley and has resided there since, taking up farming and livestock raising as an occupation. During his life he always took an active part in church and civic affairs. He was superintendent of the Pine Valley Sunday school for a number of years and was president of the Pine Valley Irrigation Irri-gation company at the time of his death. He had vice-president of the company for five yeavs and was water commissioner on Santa Clara creek for two years He is ' survived by his parents and the following brothers ana sisters: Dr. Clarence s. Gardner, Oakland; Mrs. Henry Jones, Cedar Ce-dar City;- Mrs. Eva Jensen, Eph-raim; Eph-raim; Bishop E. S. Gardner, Pine Valley; Mrs. E. M. Jensen, Provo; Mrs. Glen E. Snow, Hurricane; Mrs. J. Wjn. Pulsipher, Midvale; Mrs. Myron Stout, Salt Lake City, and Miss Effie Gardner of Pine Valley. Two brothers have preceded pre-ceded him in death, the oldest at the age of 15 years, and the other in infancy. About fifty relatives from St. George, Central, Provo, Delta, Cedar Ce-dar City, New Castle, Salt Lake City, New Harmony and Hurricane were in attendance at the funeral fun-eral services held Tuesday at Pine Valley. All of the immediate family fam-ily except one sister were present. The opening number was a vocal solo by Mrs. Mamie Paxman. Prayer, President Jos. K. Nich-oles. Nich-oles. Benediction was by Orval Ha-fen Ha-fen and the grave in the Pine Valley cemetery was dedicated by President W. O. Bentley. |
