Show March 17 Marks 97th Birthday of Relief Society March 17 marks the ninety-seventh ninety-seventh anniversary since the first organization of the Women's Relief Re-lief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This took place in the old Masonic Hall in Nauvoo, 111. March 17, 1S42. Local programs commemorated com-memorated the occasion. The west ward, under the direction direc-tion of Pres. Mina Taylor, included in-cluded the singing of early church hymns by the congregation, duet, "Oh, My Father", by Mrs. La-Prele La-Prele Snow and Mrs. Will Rogers and two solos by Mrs. Hannah C Pike. Mrs. Gordon Whitehead gave an interesting biography of the life of Eliza R. Snow, the first relief society president in Utah. Bp. Vernon Worthen gave a brief address and the poems of Eliza R. Snow were read. Past officers of the west ward relief society were presented with a corsage of carnations, as also was Mrs. Mina Taylor. A huge three-tier three-tier anniversary birthday cake was provided by Mrs. Vivian Woodbury and held 97 lighted ranrllps The south ward presented a pantomimed presentation of the history of this organization with the theme in verse written by Mabel Jarvis. The seven presidents presi-dents were depicted as follows: Emma Smith, Mrs. Gus Pendleton; Pendle-ton; Eliza R. Snow, Mrs. H. S. Snow; Mrs. Zina D. H. Young, Mrs. H. L. Reid; Bathsheba Bigler Smith, Mrs. B. Jarvis; Emmaline B. Woodward Wells; Mrs. J. W. Prince; Clarissa Smith Williams, Mrs. Rosena Blake, and Louise Y. Robinson, Mrs. Nellie Bringhurst. Following the serving of light refreshments, a special guest, Mrs. Olive Melbourne, of Salt Lake City, related incidents of her trip through Egypt and humorous readings were given by Mrs. John W. Pace and Mrs. John R. Wallis. |
