You may have even seen people using horses to help them around a farm. Horses are not used as often for work and transportation transporta-tion as they once were. Now people drive cars to go places and use tractors and other machines to do work. Because horses were so essential for work, tractors are sometimes called "iron horses." Many people now keep horses for sport and recreation. A female horse is called a mare and a male horse is called a stal lion. A filly is a baby female horse and a colt is a baby male horse. There are two main types of riding styles. Western, which centers on the needs of "cowboys" and "cowgirls," and English, which takes its style from European military tradition. A different type of saddle is used in each style of riding. An English saddle has no horn and is smaller and therefore lighter. A western saddle is designed to be more comfortable and useful. Western West-ern rides are often longer and with the work that was traditionally tradi-tionally done, such as roping cattle, the saddle needed to be more functional. Additionally, in Western riding, the reins are held in one hand where in English riding, the reins are held in two hands. There are many different types of horse breeds. Most horses can do different jobs, but some types of horses are better at certain types of jobs. For example, lighter horses are better for racing, while heavier horses are better for helping with work such as chores on a farm. There are over 300 different breeds of horses around the world. Some of the more common breeds and what they are used for are: Arabian: originated in the Middle East and is known for its intelligence and endurance. endur-ance. Arabians are often used for long distance riding. Appaloosa: a spotted breed of horse that originated in the United States and is used for English and western riding, pleasure and show riding. Thoroughbred: originated in England and is a fast, light horse. It is primarily used in racing. Saddlebred: a breed developed de-veloped in "the United States (Kentucky) known for its spirit and smooth walk. The breed was developed by crossing cross-ing Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and Morgans. Saddlebreds are often used in horse showing show-ing competitions or just as a versatile riding horse. Morgan: A versatile horse A colt and his mother used in ranch or farm work and in western and English riding. All Morgan horses descend de-scend from a stallion named Figure that was owned by Justin Jus-tin Morgan. Morgan horses are known for their power. Quarter Horse: originated in the Unites States and is used in many different types of riding including western and English riding as well as driving cattle and ranch or farm work. Draft Horse: a very strong, large horse used for pulling heavy loads especially on farms. Tennessee Walking Horse: a gentle horse known for its comfortable ride. Just like you probably have different color hair than your friend, horses are different colors too. Some of the more common color patterns of horses include: Appaloosa: a spotted horse with different patterns Bay : a reddish-brown horse with a dark mane, tail and lower legs Black: black body and hair Buckskin: brownish yellow body color with darker mane, tail and lower legs Chestnut: reddish-brown coat color, no black Dun: yellowish to gray coat color, dark mane, tail and legs Gray: mixture of white and other grayish hairs Pinto: Combination of white and markings of any other color Palomino: golden yellow coat with white mane and tail Roan: solid base coat color with white hairs mixed in and solid head, mane, tail and legs.
